Ok-
So today I was back in the groove and made a last in minute gift. Anyways, long story short, I can get through the free motion quilting, and put the binding on, but when it comes to actually machine stitching it on ITS A MESS! I HATE IT! I've looked a lot of tutorials online..what am I doing wrong? I like stitching in the ditch so that I don't see the stitch lines on top of the piece. I have pinned down the binding and then slowly go along. It ends up a mess..uneven, missed stitches etc. and I have to go back and touch it up. Any ideas?? Merry Christmas!! |

When I stitch the binding down by machine (not my favorite method) I pin very close together on the front, making sure the pins are through the binding on the back. And I go very slowly. I think it might be Amma that uses elmer's school glue to hold hers in place. You put a thin line of glue along the edge of the quilt, fold binding over it and press down to set the glue. Elmer's is water soluble, so it washes out when you wash your project. And it's not sticky, so "they" say. (O: I've not tried this method yet myself.

I use Sharon Schamber's glue basting. It works everytime!

It works! Just wash the quilt when you are done. I use washable school glue. I use it right from the bottle, no special tip. I did this once and I have never looked back! |
Decorative stitches for this method are much more forgiving that SID... If you can match the thread to the binding it won't show up as much either, if you don't want it too :D:D:D

I tried the Elmer's Glue method and it works great. I use a decorative stitch when doing a binding and it works well.

I do a zig zag stitch to sew mine down so it catches both sides nicely, otherwise, I would have the same problem you have. What stitch length are you using? I also make mine longer, that helps too Any ideas?? Merry Christmas!! |
