I have made a few quilts but I have never been able to work out how to finish off the binding neatly. It always looks messy and I have never been happy how it looks. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

this video is great for show quality binding every time

Great video. Thanks. Do you have a point for your glue? Where do you get them?

AtHomeSewing 06-16-2009 06:46 AM

The tips that Sharon uses are available at many craft stores, Plaid Art Materials - Tip Pen Set

Klue (or anyone) do you know if the Sharon Schamber Video on Curved binding will work on a 45 degree inside corner binding too?

kluedesigns 06-16-2009 05:52 PM

yes you should be able to do it the same way - and use some glue to hold things down.

Great thanks. i have just made that table runner for the wedding gift and I have four inside corners to bind which I have never done. I will give it a shot. Really great videos. Thanks for turning me onto them.

i just designed a quilt for our church fair that has a cross cut out in the center that's about 4 inches in each direction.

it should be interesting when it comes time to bind it.

I hope you took pictures of teh cross quilt I would love to see it sounds really nice Klue

The Binding thingy is on the top 10 gadgets list....Its easy, you are gauranteed a neat small already sewn corner. No unraveling because you trim close, I have been using this method for many years and it Never frayed, on baby quilts that are washed a lot- and on King quilts that are not washed so often. It actually takes less time to do than the traditional way....just in case ya wanted to know.. :-)

I use Sharon Schamber's method from the video but I don't use the glue. I find that starching the binding gives me enough firmness to just sew it on. I do follow her advice on the corners and the last two quilts I did had great miters on the binding (if I dare say so myself).

Closing the binding still takes me a little bit until my brain wraps around the right direction, but I use the angled cut and it works like a charm.

kluedesigns 06-17-2009 05:15 PM

quilt that,

does the binding tool help with doing internal binding?

i've designed a quilt that has a cross cut out right in the center of the quilt and i've been dwelling on how to bind it off.

Quilthat 06-17-2009 05:39 PM

Im not quite sure what U mean-

kluedesigns 06-17-2009 05:42 PM

imagine a quilt and then take a rotary cutter and cut a 4 inch cross out of it in the center.

so i have to binding the edges all around the quilt - just like any other quilt but i also have to bind off the center where i cut a cross out.

SO the quilt is like a frame with a void?

kluedesigns 06-17-2009 06:27 PM

yes exactly.

or another way to visualize it - its a square shaped donut. its got a hole in the middle in the shape of a cross.

Quilthat 06-17-2009 06:35 PM

U might want to try a fusible binding...using heat N bond lite, fuse it to the fabric, cut strips, fold in half, fuse it so it wraps around the edge...then use a fancy stitch or mono thread and a very small zig zag...OR..try the binding thingy....

kluedesigns 06-17-2009 06:38 PM

thats an excellent option too since this is going to be a wall hanging i can use fusible and not have to worry that it might be stiff.

kluedesigns 06-18-2009 07:50 AM

thats what i will do if nothing else works.

i'd like to figure it out because i really want to play with the negative space in quilts.

i've been thinking alot about lace and crochet and how they have open negative space - i'd like to translate that open work into quilts.

cassie69emt 06-18-2009 12:24 PM

you know I have been giving this some thought . Your lucky doesn't happen alot gggggg. I watched teh video of the binding a angel quilt and withthe use of glue you should be able to bind it much of the same way as you would with a curved quilt inside corner and the glue would hold it in place so you could sew it .
