I read all the posts for white fabric and I'm looking for a good, solid black fabric.

Seems that there are as many shades of black as white - brownish, blue, even greenish - and I've read that the dyes used can cause the fabric to disintegrate over time.

Any recommendations?!?

You are so right about the colors of black. Kona makes a True Black that I like.

amma 06-15-2010 09:48 AM

I like Kona black too, I also look for black batiks :D:D:D

Deb watkins 06-15-2010 09:49 AM

Yep, Kona black.

beachlady 06-15-2010 09:53 AM

I use Kona black too.

walen 06-15-2010 09:54 AM

Count me in the Kona fan group!

charismah 06-15-2010 10:20 AM

Me too! I use Kona!

sharon b 06-15-2010 11:57 AM

Kona

katier825 06-15-2010 12:06 PM

Kona, but the Kaufman Kona. Not the one from Joann's.

ckcowl 06-15-2010 01:10 PM

yup, Kona black :) i like some of the batiks but they fade to some pretty weird shades sometimes...the Kona seems to be pretty consistant and a good quality fabric.

CarrieAnne 06-15-2010 01:17 PM

LOL, Kona Too!

craftybear 06-15-2010 01:28 PM

Where is a good place online to buy the Kona black fabrics?

cwessel47 06-15-2010 02:09 PM

I use all kinds of black. I really like the variation in my Amish stuff. Just make sure - whichever you use - that if you want a solid background you use all the same cut. I'm sure that Kona must be "the one" considering the replies so far. I like scrappy so I guess I'm not as particular about it.

Maribeth 06-15-2010 03:04 PM

I like Kona too, but have you tried the Moda Bella Solids? The have such a great hand and drape so well.

Luv Quilts and Cats 06-15-2010 03:05 PM

My Mom has used Amish Black from Keepsake Quilting. It's very nice and a deep true black.

vickie1976 06-15-2010 03:34 PM

As a new quilter I read all the topics to learn. Thanks to everyone who has recommended Kona

gollytwo 06-15-2010 03:39 PM

I like Amish black from the Gohn Brothers
and the black from Marshall Dry Goods
Cannot beat the price on those two and the quality is excellent.

I've also used Kona and Moda's (I think it's called Bella Solids, not sure) - quite good, but more expensive.

ekbuckeye 06-15-2010 03:51 PM

I'll be searching for good prices on both of these. I need at least 12 yards and about 9 of a light and would not like paying LQS prices - Yikes!

Thanks for all your replies.

katier825 06-15-2010 05:01 PM

Try searching here:

The Kona seems to run around $5/yard. Maybe you'll find a sale.

bluebird 06-15-2010 05:03 PM

We have an Amish community near us. Needed lots of black material and couldn't pay huge prices for it. Well, went to the Amish store and got a couple of yards....is also extra wide....did my project but found that I would have to piece the back....not. Went back for more black material. The cute little Amish lady was measuring out the material and grinning asked, "What you making....bonnets?" I busted. :D

MistyMarie 06-15-2010 05:21 PM

A quilt store near my parents went out of business and I bought 12 yards of moda black. The thickness of the fabric was AWESOME. The newer moda black feels thinner, but I still like it. I am very picky about what I use my old stash on because I love the quality and feel of the black.

bearisgray 06-15-2010 05:24 PM

Michael Miller makes a very rich black.

The piece I bought shrank over two inches in width when I washed it.

(Yes, I did soak it in hot water)

ghostrider 06-15-2010 05:53 PM

Kona goes for 3.98 a yard at Hancocks of Paducah. Their Moda Bella is 4.98 a yard.

Kona

Favorite Fabrics 06-15-2010 06:44 PM

Kona cotton is good, and also RJR's Cotton Supreme. It has a slight sheen on one side of the fabric; the reverse is matte. It's nice and dark and... well, RJR's line of solids just doesn't get a lot of advertising, I guess. Our sales rep tells us that RJR is the black that Keepsake Quilting sells, so I guess they like it too!

Well, technically, RJR may be A black that Keepsake Quilting sells, but the only black solid on the store shelf is Kona Cotton. They sell solids from the RJR, Kona Cotton and Moda Bella lines. I've used all three and they're all good.

mjsylvstr 06-16-2010 03:34 AM

Kona...I love KONA for any color.........

Sewlmatesister 06-16-2010 03:43 AM

Try Fabric Depot, they sell Kona black in 6 yd or 10 yd cuts, the six yard is $24.00,the 10 yard is $36.00, they carry 5 colors in the six yard piece or carry lots more by the yard!

Michael Miller also makes a wonderful black. My LQS has both Kona and Michael Miller.

I've never been to their store, only their website, and I have seen their catalog.

I think that the sales reps give out just enough info to "talk up" the lines that they themselves are selling. Personally I don't appreciate it when they disparage their competition's products. !!

mountain deb 06-16-2010 06:45 AM

I talked with a fabric salesman several years ago, he said that at the end of the day, they dump all the dies into one vat to make up black. That is why some blacks have a blue , red, or what ever hue to them. But Kona black is made from a true black dye.

steelecg 06-16-2010 07:02 AM

That is my suggestion

jnagy1206 06-16-2010 07:18 AM

I love the Kona True Black. It is the truest black I have found & does not bleed, fade, or disintegrate. Good luck.

sidmona 06-16-2010 07:30 AM

I use Super Black from Timeless Treasures.

3Gquilter 06-16-2010 09:57 AM

I've tried several... depends on the other fabrics. the Kona is good and has a weight to the fabric. the Moda Bella is also good and has a lovely hand and drape. Have not had any problem with the dyes running for either. And you can find either/both on sale online if you look awhile.

gramquilter2 06-16-2010 11:42 AM

Keepsake Quilter has an "Amish Black Fabric" that has a rich black color. They also have a Jet Black Bali Fabric.

Yes, and Kona makes two blacks - one is darker and called 'Jet Black" and is more expensive than the regular black. But when you see them together, it a much more pure, rich black.

jemcnutt 06-16-2010 02:48 PM

Agreed

I would strongly recommend the black batik that Web Fabrics carries. It is called either Raven or Amish Black. It is the blackest black I have ever seen, and it does not bleed.

SuziC 06-16-2010 04:07 PM

I agree too!
