Black & White Beauty top done! Now.....?

How to quilt it? I can do straight stitch designs on my domestic machine like melon seeds, SID, cross hatch and any simple curves. I'd like to have most of any pattern (like a simple flower) in the snowball blocks and the "flower blocks" are busy enough and I don't want to take away from the fabrics and design. Really don't like an all-over design, what I call the "gravel road" look :(

Perhaps a viney look with a couple of leaves? (Oh, it is spring!! The first 2 pairs of swallows just arrived!
If I were brave and could FMQ (have not the least desire to!), I'd do a larger flower in the SBs the same shape as the fabric print but this is a king size and I've done them before, but not when I have to turn it and turn it!.

I cannot afford to have it LAd and the giftee's want me to do it. Nice compliment but....!

Did you see the quilt that Charismah's did, I think it was called Peach cobbler? Anyway it was the one that has the center curl with feather/petals around it and I think it would look great in the big blocks. if you look at the round trivet tutorial, it uses the same quilt design. I love studying Charismah's work to see what designs I can make a stab at. I would say duplicate but no way am I ever going to be that good.

Just beautiful. Sorry I am a new quilter and I have no advice, but wanted to say I love this quilt.

paulswalia 04-17-2012 08:52 AM

See the flower that's printed on fabric in your snowball blocks? Could you enlarge that design and center it in each block? You could make it a continuous design and move from block to block with a vine connecting each flower like the vine in the smaller print. LOVE your quilt - you've made what could otherwise be a stark black and white into a warm and inviting quilt.

Buckeye Rose 04-17-2012 08:54 AM

Beautiful quilt! Love the choices of prints. The quilting is all a personal choice, but I will give you my two cents worth! I would do a basic SITD around the big "stars", a very simple design inside the stars (I think that the print of the big stars won't show nicely with a busy design), and a busier design in the "snowballs" if you want. This is all just my honest opinion - most quilters like much more quilting than I do - I want the fabric and block designs to show.

Thanks, tartan, but did you see the part where I say I don't FMQ or LA? Thanks anyway!

That's my thought exactly, Rose. I like less quilting also. Makes for a softer look and feel. I'd love to do the flower just like you said - but I don't FMQ or LA. 'Spose I could hand quilt it! Here is sort of my viney thought. I could do this on my machine...

I love black and white. You did a beautiful job

dunster 04-17-2012 09:18 AM

That is a beautiful quilt. I like the leafy design you came up with.

Mariposa 04-17-2012 09:18 AM

Love the black & white!!

denveremerson 04-17-2012 09:31 AM

Nice job! Black and white is so stunning.

LadyElisabeth 04-17-2012 11:01 AM

The quilt is beautiful. I think the leafy design would blend in nicely

nunnyJo 04-17-2012 11:01 AM

love the quilt and the piecing, please do not over-quilt taking away from all your work. The quilt becomes still and only for looks.

my sentiments, as well

Your quilt is lovely! I have done some fmq on my home machine. Sometimes it was fun and I was pleased. Sometimes it was hard and I was tired and frustrated. But when I complete it I feel quite satisfied. And I have a lot to learn yet. I don't practice. I just go for it. Good luck!

sandy l 04-17-2012 11:51 AM

Very pretty quilt, and I think your vine design would look fine.

QUILTNMO 04-17-2012 11:53 AM

My feelings with all of my quilts, nunny! OK - leaves on the outside of the curve or inside? Will have to play with that!

Alright! We all seem to like the leafy vine design (Oh, goody!) Now here a 2 options - leaves on the outside curve or the inside curve?

Outside makes design wider because I don't think I want another "cross" vine in the block. Think I like it best!

And leaves - 1 up, 1 down or both in same direction changing per row?

yetta 04-17-2012 12:06 PM

your quilt is beautiful, don't have any advise...what ever you decide will be beautiful....

Buckeye Rose 04-17-2012 12:39 PM

The choice of leaf placement will be dependent on what batting you used - whether the quilting needs to be close (2-4") or farther apart. I do like the leafy design, it's simple and very pretty - it will also compliment the quilt without "taking over".

Kitsie 04-17-2012 02:18 PM

Rose, I'm using Dream Orient and will be doing SID along the seams between the blocks and maybe more so I should be OK. Thanks for your interest!!

Sweeterthanwine 04-17-2012 02:53 PM

Absolutely gorgeous. Have no help on the quilting because I can't FMQ at all. Someone here will be able to help you. These ladies are smart that are on this board. Great job.

JustAbitCrazy 04-17-2012 03:41 PM

That is a gorgeous quilt! :) You are very accomplished! I like your leafy design, but I'd add more leaves, just because it's such a large space. I think 4 would be a minimum. Or you could make the leaves bigger and add veins to their centers. Veins don't have to all be identical and waviness is often a plus, so they'd be fairly easy on a dsm. Good luck to you! Lucky giftee!

jljack 04-17-2012 03:43 PM

Yes, I like that viney look you came up with, too!

stampinteresa 04-17-2012 04:54 PM

Beautiful, Beautiful Quilt!!!!!! Teresa

I agree, not more leaves, but bigger ones. Will have to experiment with the vein as I want to do it continuously. Will try both ways! Thanks for the input!

do you know anyone who has an embroidery machine? You can quilt it with one of them

homecaregiver 04-18-2012 05:16 AM

Beautiful quilt and you did a great job. I love how it drapes on your bed.
Good luck with all the choices listed on the quilting part.
Pat

Annie68 04-18-2012 05:26 AM

Oh, how I love that quilt! Black and white, my favorite. I'm sure you'll figure out the perfect quilting design. Good luck.

nabobw 04-18-2012 05:30 AM

What I would do is just outline the pattern that is already of the material.

Grace MooreLinker 04-18-2012 05:32 AM

This is beautiful, don't over quilt it, I think that would spoil it's beauty. Good job.

jamsbuying 04-18-2012 06:09 AM

Your quilt is beautiful! I'm sure you will get good advise from this board.

MaryAnnMc 04-18-2012 06:15 AM

What a gorgeous quilt! I love the modern fabric with traditional blocks. There are several good suggestions here, I can't wait to see which way you take this. Please show us when you're finished!

Lucy90 04-18-2012 06:18 AM

No suggestions on quilting but I love the quilt.

quiltmom04 04-18-2012 06:59 AM

Well, the good thing about free motion, is that you DON'T have to turn it and turn it. Just move it the direction you need it to go. You could do a big flower in the big blocks and a soft line diagonally though the other blocks, which could also be free motion. Make it purposely not straight, and then it looks like a design decision rather than a straight line gone off. Love the quilt! Good luck!

carolynjo 04-18-2012 08:24 AM

Gorgeous quilt, and like you, the less quilting the better, I think.

heberstitcher 04-18-2012 09:47 AM

Absolutely STUNNING!!

Jingle 04-18-2012 09:54 AM

Very pretty quilt. Please yourself on the quilting.
