I see a lot of you quilters have 2-3 boarders on your quilts. What I would like to know how do you place them, I know about the first one, then when thats done, what is the next step?

I have tried and mine comes looking terrible!

If I'm going to miter the corners, I sew the 2 or 3 borders together, so they go on as one. The trick is in adding enough inches for the borders to extend beyond the quilt far enough to get the mitered angles. It's easy to come up short.

If I am doing regular borders, I usually sew the sides on first, then the top/bottom. I do the same with each border. Generally, I put a narrow inner border and wider outer border. I often use the same fabric as inner border for the binding. As for measuring, I measure the quilt in a couple of places, cut the border, match the center and ends and ease in if I need to along the way. I have never had wavy borders this way. Also I usually cut my border fabric lengthwise so I don't have to piece it.

I always measure the length down the center of the quilt for length of side borders, sew those on, then measure the width of quilt through the center for side top/bottom borders. This seems to straighten things out.

When I'm working with multiple borders I start with a narrow one first (1" finished maybe), then a 2 1/2" or 3" border, then a 4" to 6" outside border. The binding usually matches one of the borders. Be sure you leave a length at least the width of your border on each end of your border for mitering.

Oh, almost forgot...measure twice, cut once! LOL

What mommamac said. Measure & cut the border. Don't just start with a really long piece and sew it on then cut to fit. This is how you get wavy borders. If you're feeling brave, get the "The Border Workbook" by Jane Kime. Lots of borders, instructions on scaling them and how to fit them to YOUR quilt so the border pattern works out right.
