I just finished DS quilt for Christmas except for the binding.
I inadvertantly cut the binding strips at 2" instead of 2 1/2 "
I sewed it on from the front by machine and turned and pinned it to the back to hand sew down. It is narrow so all the binding is on back of quilt. It looks good that way actually but wasn't sure how many quilting rules I broke doing it this way. Should I take it off and start over with larger binding strips ?

prairiequeen 11-28-2010 10:50 AM

No way!

ncsewer 11-28-2010 10:52 AM

Nope, if it looks good to you, it was inteneded to be that way. If you say nothing about it, no one will ever know anything except you made a great quilt!.

amma 11-28-2010 10:54 AM

I would leave it! There are not any rules... it is what you want and like :D:D:D

Theresa 11-28-2010 10:56 AM

To provide an option, you could trim a small amount from where the seam is (usually 1/4" wide, but be careful.) You don't want that seam to get too thin. This will give more room for the binding.

I agree that leaving alone is the best solution, if it visually works for you.

nancy42 11-28-2010 11:06 AM

Thanks everyone ! I will leave it. I think it really does look good this way. Especially because the border on the front is striped fabric that looks finished on it's own.
I appreciate the input very much !

mhunt1717 11-28-2010 11:09 AM

It's beautiful the way it is!

Zebra2 11-28-2010 11:25 AM

I always cut my bindings 2 1/4". I wouldn't worry about it. Actually quilts for show are supposed to have finished binding 1/4" wide . . . mine doesn't get quite that narrow!

Fiber Artist 11-28-2010 11:29 AM

No rules if you like the way it looks your good to go.

craftybear 11-28-2010 11:48 AM

I would leave it your own creative binding, no rules, so you are okay!

sewgull 11-28-2010 12:31 PM

Leave it alone, if you are happy so are we.

Hi Fiber Artist, can I have the puppy?

stewyscrewy 11-28-2010 12:53 PM

Nope noway dont If you liked the look then leave it for sure.

grammyp 11-28-2010 12:56 PM

Are there rules? Yikes, hope I don't get caught, I bet I have broken all of them. Your main rule should always be "My quilt, my rules". If you like it, it is perfect.

Holice 11-28-2010 01:00 PM

no show rules on bnding other than straight and even and well applied and good corners. This is a quilt judge speaking.

ccb2200 11-28-2010 01:07 PM

I didn't think there were any quilting rules. You can do whatever you want. I would leave it on especially if it looks good that way.

PMY in QCA-IL 11-28-2010 01:10 PM

The "Quilt Police" retired a while ago. As long as you like it and it's neat and even, leave it as it is!!

nativetexan 11-28-2010 01:34 PM

Alex Anderson always uses 2" binding.

maryel 11-28-2010 05:09 PM

If it looks good, why mess with it!

maryb119 11-28-2010 05:14 PM

I usually cut my bindings at 2 1/4 for regular cotton fabric and 2 1/2 for flannel to help with the thickness of the fabric. Binding can be cut at any width. I measure the quilt and figure out how many strips I will need and then cut the binding fabric accordingly. I can fudge on my binding if i have to.

my favorite rule.....it may not be according to Hoyle, but Hoyle isn't doing it!!!!!

lberna 11-29-2010 05:03 AM

Quilting rules? Maybe in judging at quilt shows. But other than that, just do what pleases you.

Joanne 11-29-2010 06:17 AM

My new rule is if you make a boo-boo, but you are consistent with it on whatever you are making, it is not a boo-boo, but your interpetation of the design! The guilt free rule for quilters and knitters-just as long as it is pleasing to you.

stitchin 11-29-2010 06:30 AM

It is perfect just the way it is! You are the artist!!

fireworkslover 11-29-2010 06:38 AM

On many of my art quilts, there's no binding showing on the front. However it looks the best to you - keep it that way.

Jeanniejo 11-29-2010 07:04 AM

I cut my bindings at 2 1/4 " so I guess I would only have a half of a boo boo! Thank god there are NO rules !!!!

quiltlin 11-29-2010 07:20 AM

I always cut my binding at 2". I'm sure it looks terrific!!!

amandasgramma 11-29-2010 07:24 AM

RULES????? There's RULES???? Okay -- who called in the quilting police????????? If you have it done --- and it covers the seam line...LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! :) :)

lillybeck 11-29-2010 07:49 AM

Absolutely not. Quilting is an art and if you are happy with your design then no rules were broken.

quiltmom04 11-29-2010 08:08 AM

I cut mine at 2" or 2 1/8" anyway. I like a thin, fine binding.

dphelps 11-29-2010 08:33 AM

If it looks good, Leave It.

Mad Gertie 11-29-2010 08:59 AM

Hi Nancy,

I don't think you broke any rules, our tutor here in England always told us to cut 2" binding strips. We fold them in half, iron them then fold each half in half again and iron. We then stich from the front on the 1st 1/2" line , turn over to the back and hand stich the last 1/2" down . It works beautifully and looks neat !
Try it , and good luck from Mad Gertie in Kent.

Pickle 11-29-2010 10:06 AM

Let it go, I have dine that all ready and found out that sometime a narrow binding is very pretty. Just feel like that is the way you meant it to look.

ORSunshineQuilter 11-29-2010 10:27 AM

So, hey, what are you afraid of? The Quilt Police? There ain't any! Seriously, that is what is known as a design decision! There are no booboos! Just design decisions! I am sure he will never know the difference and will love it! Just keep going!

quiltingfan 11-29-2010 12:58 PM

I think my bindings are too big and don't lay flat. I want to try this size next time. But I must say I am loving the sewing right sides together and pulling threw and then stitching it closed. It works for small quilts and then I make sure I still pin really well and proceed to quilting it. No rules around here if it works for you. Right? :D

irma tapia 11-29-2010 01:33 PM

Rules? What rules ? LOL

quilt3311 11-29-2010 02:40 PM

If it looks ok leave it. I've actually done similar, on purpose, on small wall pieces. Makes like a facing rather than binding. But it works.

stormatsea45 11-29-2010 03:30 PM

I usually cut my bindings at 2" to 2 1/8", using a 1/4" seam. I like a narrow binding and this also makes the binding full to the edge with the batting. I have never had a problem with the seam coming out because of it being only 1/4". In fact when I do a miniature quilt I cut the seam allowance on the binding down to 1/8" before I turn the binding to the back to hand stitch.

sheila bee 11-29-2010 03:36 PM

Lost my quilting rule book ...fired the quilting police...and now i have all the fun i can stand....hehehehehehe.....

TN Donna 11-29-2010 04:31 PM

No. If it is on it is on. Let it be a reminder next time to cut wider. I did that on my first log cabine andit did alright.

kathidahl 11-29-2010 05:58 PM

No rules...no quilt police....
