My quilt is already wide enough but needs to be a little longer. I am going to put a narrow border at the sides and wider top & bottom. Do I sew the sides on first then the top & bottom . Does it even matter.

I usually sew the sides on and then the top and bottom borders.
I don't think it matters. Unless you're doing stripes or something where you would prefer it one way or the other :)
I have done the same thing when trying to add length to a quilt.
Reason: I want the attention to the top/bottom and not the sides (so the seam is on the side, not in the top/bottom border).
I think since the top and bottom borders are wider, they should be sewn on last. They will look better without a seam in them.
