Border Quilting
 

I'm machine quilting my first quilt on a mid-arm. I'm ready to do the side borders and thought that I have to take the quilt off of the frame and load it side-ways so that I can do a continuous run on the border. Is this the correct way to do a border?

I think a lot of long armers do the borders as they go. They have a bit more room to stitch the design than you do with your mid arm. Having said that, I have a long arm and have not yet picked up the knack for this. All that starting and stopping makes my design look jagged. I'm sure that with practice I could get it to work, but right now, I do what you do. take the quilt off and turn it.

I have tried quilting the side borders as I quilt the middle, doesn't work very well. It looks better if you turn the quilt, but that isn't so easy. You have to base across the border as you go because there will be fullness compared to the quilted middle.

I turn mine to do side borders.

I do mine as I go, but my machine is 26" and I do either freehand or ruler work. What kind of design are you quilting?

Before I got my LA when I was using a DSM on a frame (short-arm), I would turn the quilt to do continuous borders. If you baste the side edges of your quilt as you go down the quilt, you shouldn't have much trouble with extra fullness in the borders unless you've got a really wide border. If you're nervous about that, you can always pin-baste the borders before you take it off the frame or baste within the borders.

I have a longarm, and I do both ways, just depends on the design for me.
