how do you decide how wide to make a border? Is it personal choice or does the block size have something to do with it? I've seen instructions with anywhere from 6 to 12 inches. Help

Some patterns will give a size for the border. I tend to go by personal choice. I actually like more than one border. Some times I put a thin one.. say it finishes at 2" and then a wide one that finishes at 6". It really just depends on what I have so far on the top. I rarely determine my border width until everything else is put together.

Thanks! I'm making this one up as I go along so I'll see what it needs when I put it together. It's a queen size and I usually only play with crib size. This is a big adventure.

For me, that is the most fun way to quilt. A friend calls it doing a Round Robin by yourself! LOL! Can't wait to see the finished project. Barb C

I have made all sizes and it really is personal choice. We expelled the "quilt police" from this group :lol: But I too like to make it up as you go.

They offer a free class at Quilt University that addresses the very question of how wide to make the borders and what design to choose. I found it somewhat helpful, ande it does not take that much time to study.

I like to make the top and bottom wider, it's easier to make the bed.

I always look at the quilt to see if it needs to be a little bigger or smaller then what I first thought and adjust the border accordingly. Has saved me more then once when I miscaulated the size.

Isn't that what borders are for to help adjust your errors.

:D I LOVE IT! The QUILT POLICE!!! I am glad someone else has run into this. I make quilts and other primitive items without any patterns or instruction. They are my inventions and I love them. Isn't that really all that matters; having a good time, relaxing and enjoying ones self? :D

You could just fold your fabric the width you think you would like and place it under your top to see if you like it, before you make that cut, that won't let you go back.
What is pleasing to your eye is what is important.
