Hello! I just got EQ7 in the mail yesterday (YAAAAY!) for my Mom for Mother's Day. She hasn't gotten the time to sit down with it yet, but I need to become familiar with the program so that I can provide knowledgeable tech support.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Anyway, the first two projects I've tackled are working out the proportions for an in-the-future Jewel Box for a friend's Queen bed. That went well. I'm also designing the Warm Wishes for my much-loved Aunt who's recently had some troubling news regarding a lump on her femur. I figured the design would be a simple one to tackle and it would go together quickly. I already have the fabrics for the main squares of the quilt. Her tastes run in the pink-green-brown variety.

I'm just a little stuck on what to do for borders! I think I like a three-fabric surround to mimic the pieced squares in the Warm Wishes. I just came up with that this morning, though, so I'm not sure how my thoughts will settle.

I'm also debating whether or not it needs an entirely different pinky-salmon-rose fabric for the outermost border. Would that be too complex? Better to stick to just the four main fabrics in the quilt? Or do you think it might add something? Pink is her absolute favorite color, so I wanted that to be the focus of the border.

This community is full of knowledge, experience, and OPINIONS! Help?

Here are the fabrics in question. I found the green-based focal fabric first on sale at my LQS and immediately thought of her. I built the other fabrics around it.

Without the brown border, what I was thinking last night.

I added the brown border this morning.

I like both but I do like the brown inner border.:)

whinnytoo 05-10-2011 02:51 AM

I like the one with the brown inner border, it ties everything together well.

sandyo 05-10-2011 02:52 AM

I like the brown boarder it frames it nicely.

Ann912 05-10-2011 02:58 AM

I really like the added brown border.

Diana Lynne 05-10-2011 03:00 AM

I like the brown border too

sewcrafty 05-10-2011 03:14 AM

Try out the brown border first, followed by the cream and then the pink.

eastermarie 05-10-2011 03:31 AM

In the quilt body you have the cream and then the brown. I think your cream, brown, and then pink borders really set it off.

SueDor 05-10-2011 03:34 AM

I like it with the brown border. Looks great!

PaperPrincess 05-10-2011 04:22 AM

I like the brown border, but I would not make the cream and brown borders the same width. Probably go with a brown border about half the size you have shown.

gal288 05-10-2011 04:26 AM

Brown inner border really accents the quilt nicely.

Do you know how to do phlanges? I'm sort of the phlange queen - I love them. Some people might not notice, but quilters do. Where your brown is, use a darker brown for a 1/4" to 1/2" phlange. That mixes up the size and gives definition to the outer edge. I usually make mine with a 1 1/2" strip, folded in half to give it some body.

I think this is the pic with a phlange

Oh, that looks so neat! Are there any tutorials that you recommend for figuring out how to do them?

quiltingaz 05-10-2011 05:25 AM

definitely add brown border. Sets off the lighter colors in border.

Judi in Ohio 05-10-2011 05:29 AM

I'm not sure where I first saw them, but I do them as any other border. The one in my avatar is 1 1/2" strip folded wrong sides together, and sew it as you would any border. Two sides, the top, bottom. I sew the raw edges first. It just adds a little pizazz and I'm all about pizazz. I'm a quilter who likes all kinds of different processes. And I love to come up with neat border ideas.

I also like the quilt with the brown border added.

QuiltnNan 05-10-2011 01:36 PM

to get a better feel for what you've designed, right click on the quilt. uncheck outline blocks and outline patches. it removes the physical division of the parts and the quilt looks 'smoother'. also, when you want to see how to cut the block, choose file-print-[then the type of cutting] and be sure to check size from quilt. then choose preview. you'll have to zoom in to see what it says unless your eyes are very good. also choose preview when you are using file-fabric yardage. that way, you are not wasting ink and paper just to view the info you might change before the final design. these are just some hints that i found to be most helpful on a regular basis. have fun with it.

Ruby the Quilter 05-10-2011 01:38 PM

The brown really frames it.

Traditional 05-11-2011 02:41 AM

Brown just sets it off!!!
Very pretty.

dixiechunk 05-11-2011 02:53 AM

I like the one with the brown border best.

Ahh, this view helped my perspective a lot! Thank you!

Here are the pictures of a few suggestions implemented. I like the thinning of the brown border a great deal. Not quite so fond of the brown on the inner border. What does everyone think? Brown is definitely staying...

My new current favorite with a thinner brown border.

Brown on the inside as a test.

so-sew 05-11-2011 03:11 AM

I like the brown border.

coachmatthewsvhs 05-11-2011 03:18 AM

without the brown border it is a much "softer" look. Bold with the brown..... I like contrast, so the brown for me. Either will be wonderful

kimscruzer 05-11-2011 04:04 AM

I vote for brown ! Too much pink , but that's just me. The pink border drew my eye away from the quil.t

Too much pink for me too, personally, but I know that's the kind of look she loves. The brown helps give my eyes a break.

MM 05-11-2011 04:07 AM

I guess it's a matter of taste, but I'm with you-I like the thinner brown between the beige and pink the best.

It's a beautiful quilt; I'm sure your aunt will be thrilled with it.

kimscruzer 05-11-2011 04:10 AM

Maybe a small pink inner border , then the brown ; )

suekenyon 05-11-2011 04:18 AM

I really like the brown border...makes it pop.

Vat 05-11-2011 04:31 AM

I really like all three (3) borders.

Baloonatic 05-11-2011 04:50 AM

Its perfect!

Baloonatic 05-11-2011 04:51 AM

The 3 colors in the border...Its perfect!

Buckeye Rose 05-11-2011 04:53 AM

I think the darker brown border provides a frame for the rest of the quilt....and I really like the color combinations!

Cris 05-11-2011 05:05 AM

try the brown border on the outside

Kutnso 05-11-2011 05:05 AM

I think the brown inner border is winning. Really great looking quilt.
Good luck, Kutnso

CorneliaVa 05-11-2011 05:13 AM

I like this lay out .... have you tried reversing the brown and cream borders? ... brown inner, cream middle, pink outer?

matraina 05-11-2011 05:14 AM

I love all the colors in your quilt and the design. Both tops look lovely but I think the one with the brown border is a little more striking.

I tried that arrangement and posted the picture on page 2 but in my opinion it didn't turn out quite as attractive as the neutral inner border, especially when I remove the lines in EQ7. I'll try to get another picture without the lines when I get home from work. :)
