At a recent visit to my LQS the owner and I were talking about threads for FMQ and she recommended YLI bottom line thread so bought a reel. I have always been taught, n read that you should always use the same thread in your bobbin as in your top thread but now.........

I have just finished a sofa throw for my Sister and my FMQ must be the best I have ever done, the tension is fantastic and my sewing seemed so much better and that was using a 40 cotton thread and the YLI in my bobbin.

Now I was browsing Leah Day's site and noticed that she uses it too, so I am in good company :lol:

Must go back to the LQS and stock up :thumbup:

When working on machine applique, I use Sulky Rayon on top and Sulky bobbin thread on bottom. This is the only time I've used two separate threads. I'm going to bookmark this and follow it. Thanks for info.

I will be interested in what other members say as it is against all that I have been taught but I was amazed at the results.

I use Bottom Line as well and it's great in the bobbin and also in the top for applique or FMQ if you don't want heaviness, when pebbling for eg. It's from Superior Threads though, not YLI. :-D

i love using bottom line thread---you can get so much more on the bobbin than with the heavier top thread. and it always runs smooth...
i know there are (recommendations) to use the same thread top and bottom- but i (think) that recommendation is usually made when someone is having tension issues- sometimes tension problems can be solved by using the same thread top and bottom
i have never had a tension problem when i am using a (bobbin thread) with a more multi-purpose thread...only when i mix other threads -- like decorative threads/heavier threads.

this is a very common practice amongst longarm quilters.

i've been using this thread in the bobbin for 5 years now.

My LQS only stocks the YLI one, I have just been there for another reel and she was really impressed with my FMQ, she thought I had a LA :lol: (I wish) she hadn't tried the thread, she did, as I used to, always uses the same in the bobbin as in the top, I think she might be trying something different soon :twisted:

Sorry - I didn't know that YLI also did a thread called Bottom Line, how confusing! LOL

I am using Bottom Line in my LA right now for the first time with Isacord 40wt embroidery thread in the top. So far I am loving it and I especially like how much more thread the bobbin holds.

But Bottom Line is definitely a Superior Threads product. It is copyrighted and trademarked as a name brand Superior product.

If you are using a YLI product it is not Bottom Line. It may be their Basting and Bobbin thread which is cotton (bottom line is a 60 wt poly). Their website doesn't state what weight thread it is. YLI makes wonderful thread as well.

I normally only use it for my peicing. I like to have a varigated thread for my bobbin when I'm quilting it. I have been doing alot of plain colour backs lately so I wanted the quilting to stand out.
