Here is a tutorial where the lady did placemats but she did pull the backing fabric to the front and showed how to do it. She did the corners plain and also showed how to miter them.

i miter when i do this. it can be a bit trickier due to the excess fabric but it can be done.

It can be done easily - what I do is fold the corner point of the backing forward to the front corner. That gets you an edge that is 45 degrees angled from the vertical and horizontal sides. Then fold the side straight towards the middle. You'll now have half a miter at the top edge. Do the same with the top edge and the two will meet together with a perfect miter.

Practise with a piece of paper: top left corner folded at a 45 degree angle to the center, then right edge towards the middle and you'll see the angle appearing. Then top folded down to meet the right edge - perfect miter.

I watched the video and that is how I thought it was done. Thanks for your help, Michele

Buy the Quick Easy Miter Binding tool. It's around $14 - $17, but you won't be sorry. Nancy's Notions has it today for $14.99. I won't bind any other way now.

thanks for the tute. I was just doing a baby quilt and couldn't seem to do my miters right using the backing fabric.

Liked this tutorial a lot. Learned a lot of handy techniques.

I still didn't do my corners well. I know I did it on an earlier quilt. maybe it's just not my day. I did get the self binding done though but will watch the tute again another time.

Eleanor Burns has a great way to miter corners of the backing. Go to her website and find the video called "Finishing your Quilt."
