Calculating required border lengths for multiple borders and mitered corners
I want to add 3 borders to my quilt top .... 1st one 1" (finished), 2nd one 2.5" (finished), 3rd one 3.5" (finished). I need to calculate the fabric required for each border BEFORE I start this process as I might be short on the final border. I want to make sure I have enough fabric before I start - instead of getting 3/4 of the way done and then finding out I don't have enough. Is there a formula out there so you know exactly how much yardage is needed prior to planning on the multiple mitered border?

did you want them LOF or pieced WOF... makes a difference

you add each width to the pieced section. Say pieced part is 60"x90" - add 2" to each side for new measurement, then the second border and then the third........be sure and add the extra you might need if you mitre the corners or each section. Difficult to be more specific without knowing the base size

If you want a mitered corner: add the finished width of all the borders, multiply by 2, and add 1", then add this to your regular border width.
In your example, the total finished width would be 7". You will need this on both ends, so multiply by 2 and add 1". 7 x 2 =15 + 1 = 15. If your quilt is 50 x 60, add 15 to each dimension and cut your borders 65 x 75. I think this would be the length of your final border if you are doing it non-mitered. |
get out your graph paper...when visual, it's obvious...

I would like to make another suggestion to you, I would sew all 3 borders together, then do your mitering, This will give you the Perfect Mitered corners on your borders. I do a very different Mitered corner then was shown on this board a few weeks back, That one to me was way to complicated. YouTube has a Wonderful Tutorial on Mitered Borders not alot of math involved. Good Luck and Post pictures when finished.
