scroll down to the Sunset heron. I love this and it would be aperfect Christmas present for my mil. BUT I am a new quilter and don't want to get in over my head. The part I'm worried about is the water. I can do the border and I can applique the heron by hand.

I would think you could buy a batik fabric which would look like water. I did lighthouses and there was fabric available that was very similar to that. Check with your local quilt shop to see what they might have. Its a beautiful picture.

For ME the hard part would be making the flying geese border. The rest I think you could easily find batiks to mimi the effect you want. But those geese fly me to the bridge to jump off every time!

Awesome quilt to do! As for the flying geese border, I would suggest you go to quilterscache.com - look in the how to section - there are several ways to make the f.g. without any waste. I have used several other ways, including some of the instructions on this site, but seem to gravitate back to those instructions. It is all in what you become comfortable with.

The water is just one fabric, the colors are all part of the dye pattern.

That is so pretty! I'm not sure that it would be too hard to do. Batiks would make it gorgeous, and there is a quick, easy way to make flying geese. Oooooh, if you make it, please post pictures for us.

I saw some fabric similar if not JUST like the "water" in this quilt in the 4th of July fabric section at the local Joann's. Don't know if it's too late to get 4th of July fabric now but I'd check the discounted sections at Joanns to make sure they don't have something you can use. Batik fabric is also a great suggestion.

Try emailing them and see what they say. Maybe they can give you a better idea on the level of the project!!!!!

What a gorgeous quilt!!! :D :D :D I think once you find some batiks it will go together quite easily!!! If it was me, with all of those flying geese...I would paper piece them in long strips :wink: perfect geese, every time 8) 8) 8)

well they sell this as a pattern and as a kit. Just not sure I can afford to buy the kit right now. I think though that I could just do something similar from the pic. The class I took on quilting had us doing lots of flying geese so I'm not intimidated by them. I'm doing them in a lapquilt for dd right now. Paper piecing to me sounds harder! I may give this a try. My mil would love this. I can't get out to look at fabric for a while as I sprained my ankle today but i could go ahead and draw out a pattern for it.
