My son lives in southern California and a regular quilt is too warm for him - it ends up being kicked onto the floor while he sleeps. I would like to make him more of a coverlet and thought that flannel might be heavy enough with all the seams from the piecing to give it a nice weight. He has a platform bed, one without a box spring, so it doesn't need to be as large as a regular full bedspread. What do you think? Will flannel work for this? I'd make sure it was washed & shrunk down completely before you use it... you'll have to wash & dry it several times... I used flannel in a jacket I made I wanted warmth w/o bulk... oh, hey we had a thread about this type of thing several weeks ago, someone suggested using muslin as the batting on a summer weight quilt.

Flannel or in my DD's case, just another layer of cotton fabric.
Some even just go with the backing if the seams don't show through the backing. :D:D:D

Yep , I have made "summer" quilts using flannel, and have used it in quilted jackets. Preshrink !! The shinkage for flannel is a lot more than quilters cottons.
You may want to use just a layer of muslin, if you think the flannel will be to warm.

I've used flannel in baby quilts. They're going to be washed countless times, and I don't have to be concerned about batting eventually coming apart. In fact, the flannel has held up better than the binding edges.

i have used flannel many times for batting in quilts...it does make them warm though.i have wondered what would be good to use for light weight quilts, my son lives in Florida and i would like to make him a light weight one, maybe a single sided flannel that you pre-wash would work good...in fact i think i'm going to try it :)

For really lightweight baby wraps (like receiving blankets but designed for hot weather) I've even used seersucker and broadcloth, since all you want is just enough to cover up the little one when you are in air conditioning.

I was searching this topic today and found a bunch of threads on all kinds of "alternative" batting. Lots of people said flannel was great as a battting.

If I back the quilt with flannel I don't use batting.
