I know that people make memory quilts using fabric from loved ones clothing.

Fabric.com has refilled their $1.95 clearance fabrics - there are a lot of shirting fabric listed. Can they be used for quilting? Isn't shirting fabric usually a light weight fabric? Iis this something that should be felt before buying to check thickness.....not that I need to add any more fabric to my stash until I reorganize it ... but am curious about your feelings about this.

I would be careful with it. You don't want it if it has any polyester in it. It's difficult if you can't feel it/see it.

If you like the fabric, then go for it! Quilts used to be made out of old clothes all the time. clothes were generally made to last through more frequent washings than most quilts get.

I have used shirtings. I did see the same ones on Fabric.com, but they had a pretty high poly percentage. I like oxford cloth in quilts as well.

I think it would be something you'd have to see before deciding, even if you're okay with some poly in your quilts. Some shirtings are just too thin - they're almost see-through.

Most of the ones I picked up last at a thrift store were Brooks Brothers, with lovely fabrics and subdued patterns and colors. One of them I kept for myself, just added small shoulder pads and took a breast dart from under the boobs to the waist. I think it looks good, feels right and will last a long time.
Lots of people love men's shirts for the quality of fabric, much better than women's shirts. Costs a LOT less than buying just the material.
