there are many different sizes of blocks, have you picked out a size yet?? 6inch, 8 or 9 inch some are even 12 inches or bigger. It sounds like you are wanting to paper piece it ??? or do you need the pattern on paper to follow the directions, as well as the size of strips you need to cut???

If you'll decide what size block you want and how many different fabric you want to use I'll make you up a list from my EQ program.

With this one you don't need to measure and cut pieces and you don't need a pattern. Just make the strips any width you want. Make the center square the same width as your strips. For example, if you use 2" strips then make your center a 2" square.

I did this one using this method. It was very quick and easy.

I have used the method from pam's post and it was easy. The trick is to make sure and turn the piece in the same direction every time. (You'll know if you go the wrong direction). I layed my stips out in order and it turned out as planned.

I went to your blog, I LOVE your Iris folding and your cards are beautiful!!!

As the directions say a few times... always make sure that the last piece that you sewed is towards your belly. After sewing on the last strip and cutting them apart, stack them next to the machine face down, which is how you are going to place them on the next strip, with the last strip towards you.

I only messed up once. Taking something apart is a quick lesson to not do that again.

well i have the 1 or 1 1/2 square i got from Rhonda here that could be my starting square if you dont advice me otherwise???
I m happy to have more than one size too, perhaps one starting with that little one and one starting using 4 inch

Nina,

I would use a consistent size for the blocks, but then I am a traditionalist.

If you use the same size square in the center, the same width of strips, and a consistent seam allowance, your log cabin blocks will come out the same size and you can use different layouts when they are done. You won't have to trim or fudge to make them fit, and the pattern will be more even.

If you want to see what it looks like using different sizes, draw a few on craft paper and put them next to each other. That way you can make a better decision.

I looked at those directions again and it actually starts with two complete strips sewn together and then you cut them into sections that would make up the center square and the first strip.

Look at the directions to see what I mean. Absolutely doesn't mean that you can't take the 1 1/2" square you have and a 1 1/2" strip and sew all the squares onto the strip then cut them apart.

One thing I would mention is to definately use a ruler to cut them apart as advised in the directions. I was doing some small ones and to save time I just used scissors and cut them. The blocks were a little wonky but that was OK because I was trimming them down anyway to my finished size.

Here are cutting templates for a 4 inch finished block

The templates are not lettered in the correct sewing order, for some reason EQ printed them out this way

Here are templates for a 6 inch block. the border around the blocks are the seam allowance. You can cut these out and use them to trace on cardboard, plastic or whatever works best for you :D :D :D
