I made a quilt for my daughter in law and I think it was called "Pretty in Pastels but I am not positive that was the pattern name. Now my grandson wants that pattern (different fabrics of course) and I cannot find it. It was super easy 2 1/2 inch strips but I am not sure how long to cut the pieces.

when you get your strips sewd together, that's how long you will cut them, so they will be square
I would say cut the strip 10.5" long.
If you sew five 2.5" strips together, they will end up a finished width of 10". Add .5" to that for the seam allowance, and you will end up with a 10.5" unfinished square. Edit: Kathy's right. I would just sew 5 strips together, iron, measure how wide they are, and then cut the strip set in that length. Super accurate! |
Looks like a "Rail Fence" pattern. If your strips were 2 1/2" wide then your length is probably 10.5 inches. You want your squares to be square so whatever the width of your 5 strips sewn together comes to, that would be the length that you cut each "square"

Looks like all three of us were on the "same page"
Just measure the length and the width and add 1/2 in.(for you 1/4 in seam on both sides)
Should be 10 1/2", but I make my strip sets and then cut them into the squares.
It is kind of a variation of a rail fence, but the blocks all go the same directions so it isn't exactly the same as a rail fence.
Thanks to everyone for their help. As you can tell I am pretty new to this business but I am definitely having fun!
10.5 inch will make them into a square if you are using 2.5 inch wide strips.
I can't answer your question about the strips but wanted to say your quilt is beautiful.
I love the quilt! I made a baby quilt similar to this one and I used the whole length of the strip then cut them square. I did it with 4 strips per block so mine were smaller. I really like you quilt. What colors are you going to use for your grandsons quilt?
