Can you quilt with any type of material
I have been given a lot of rayon material on a roll and I wanted to know what to do with it. It feels like cotton but you can easily use it for a free flowing skirt. But can it be made into a quilt. If feels like a lighter version of cotton.
It was made in Indonesia. I want to use the fabric for something. any suggestions |
It is truly probably more suitable for flowing skirts than for a quilt. One can quilt with anything they want to, but thin material does not stand up well in the long haul and it seems a shame to go to the trouble of making a quilt and not use fabrics that will last.

I made a medival custume Out of Rayon given to me

Since rayon is extremely flammable, I don't think I'd want it as a bed cover.

I watched a lady making chennile with rayon, they say it makes the very best chennile ever!

You can make a quilt out of whatever you like - cotton is the favorite because it's easy to work with and affordable. :) Other fabrics can be more difficult to work with and create a nightmare for a new sewer...but thirty years ago people regularly used polyester in their quilts and people still today often use satin and velvet in crazy quilts. There are no rules. :) I don't know about Rayon being more flammable than any other non-flame retardent fabric, but if that's true then I would take that into consideration. Other than that, do what pleases you.

Doesn't it ravel?

I've read conflicting articles about the flammability of rayon (vs cotton). The difference seems to be the lighter weight of rayon, as opposed to most cotton fabrics, which makes it more readily consumed.
Maybe we should all just go with wool or silk (protein fibers). Okay, I'll stop being such a worry-wart! :p |
You could stabilize it on muslin, then you have a more substantial piece to work with. Not sure I would use it in a quilt other than a crazy quilt.

Not all rayon is washable. Maybe you should try to wash this first to see what you want to do with it.
