can you tell old from NEW fabrics?

take a good look at these fabrics. They are ones I picked out to go into a special quilt where the receiver LOVES 30' repro's!

Can you tell which are repro's and which are the real deal? DO you think it would be OK for me to use them all, you know mixing old and new.

Now before you freak out, the old were stored well, and have been washed, ironed, and present NO weakness, odor, etc.

I can tell you that TEN of these are vintage!

barny 04-02-2012 06:50 PM

I'm old enough to tell, but why not use them together. I would be proud to have a quilt made of them. Barny

donnalynett 04-02-2012 06:50 PM

Not a clue!

valleyquiltermo 04-02-2012 06:58 PM

Well I think I have 7 of the vintage ones picked out, but I'd say use em all.

not all 30's prints were feedsacks....and not all feedsacks were course, loosely woven fabrics either...I would let you TOUCH test these and I bet you would still miss a few!

nstitches4u 04-02-2012 07:01 PM

I can't tell the difference. They are all very pretty. I think they would look beautiful together. Please post a photo of the finished quilt.

Holice 04-02-2012 07:12 PM

some appear to be pushing late 30's and early 40's but all within the general time period. so use them all.

I got a shock the other day when I went into a store and discovered that vintage is younger than I am.

earthwalker 04-02-2012 07:36 PM

Love them. I buy a lot of vintage and often incorporate new and vintage into my projects. I say go for it! This is going to be a beautiful quilt (you won't forget us when it comes to pics will you?).

Vicki W 04-02-2012 07:40 PM

Use them all, they are wonderful. I have some of those.

QuiltnLady1 04-02-2012 08:08 PM

I agree -- use them all since they work well together. I know 7 that are vintage, and they all blend well. Do what our foremothers did and mix the decades of the fabrics to confuse the quilt archivists in 50 years :).

Tartan 04-02-2012 08:17 PM

I think they all look wonderful together. I think no one will be able to tell and they will make a great quilt.

Dotha 04-02-2012 11:24 PM

That group of fabric looks a lot like what is in my repo stash.

alikat110 04-03-2012 01:54 AM

Beautiful fabrics....your quilt...no quilt police here!!!!

gsbuffalo 04-03-2012 02:58 AM

I have a few of those prints from a ways back..I would use them all for sure

karenpatrick 04-03-2012 03:17 AM

I was only able to pick out 6 of them. They are all beautiful and I wouldn't hesitate to use any of them. I think they will make a stunning quilt. i love 30s fabrics.

117becca 04-03-2012 03:55 AM

I'm so jealous!!! I love 30s fabrics!!! Don't really know why, but I do love them!!

30's fabrics are my favorites. I can't tell which are vintage but love using them all. Please, please post pics of any 1930's quilts you have done. I woulld realllllly appreciate it. Thanks margee

gramarraine 04-03-2012 06:10 AM

A year ago I made a quilt for my DD out of vintage. I didn't have quite enough vintage and added some new to the old. No one knows but me. It turned out beautiful. In fact some of the old were like ones you have pictured.

lfstamper 04-03-2012 06:14 AM

Beautiful fabrics and yes use them together! I could tell some of the old but not 10. Show us when you are done.

joyce j 04-03-2012 06:23 AM

oh HOlice....say it isn't so..hehehe....that is ok, 70's rock music is not considered classic rock...whatever...my heart/soul say I am still 19, so that is what I am...ehhehhe

QuiltNama 04-03-2012 05:11 PM

Oh please use them all as they look so nice together. It will be a beautiful quilt.

jaciqltznok 04-03-2012 05:19 PM

has anyone guessed which 10 are the older ones?

Sew and Sew 04-03-2012 06:48 PM

Well I did have fun guessing which ones were vintage, but to tell you the truth they are all fantastic. And my favorite quilts in the whole wide world are 1930.s reproduction.........Reminds me of my granny's farm...........I would go there every summer in a little town called Milton, NC...........I say my love of quilts come from that memory, although my granny died long before I ever became interested in quilting........thank you for these beautiful fabrics, and thanks for reminding me of my love of the 1930's fabric.

sammygirlqt 04-03-2012 07:06 PM

I would use all of these beautiful fabrics. Once in the quilt and quilted, you will never tell the difference if there is any in quality. I would be proud to own a quilt with these fabrics.

BETTY62 04-03-2012 07:28 PM

Jacquie, your fabric is beatiful. I love all of them and think they will look beautiful together. I am looking forward to seeing the finished quilt as I know it will be awesome.

luvstoquilt 04-03-2012 08:00 PM

Love all of the fabrics shown and think they would be wonderful together. I do it all the time but then I am a lover of "30's quilts! Can't wait to see how you put it together!!

MisDixie 04-03-2012 08:06 PM

I would say the first 10 are the real deal, but then again... they all work well together.

MacThayer 04-03-2012 09:13 PM

The quality of the fabric is more important than the age. If it was well stored and cared for, being "vintage" doesn't matter. I do recognize a few of the vintage fabrics. For example, one of the pink florals is in the vintage quilt wrapped around me right now! My great grandmother made it. I also recognize other prints from quilts my great grandmother and grandmother made, and prints I've seen in the local Quilt Shop that obviously aren't vintage. But don't put me to the test! I'd hate to be graded on being right on this! You're only getting my best guess.

Bet your quilt will be fantastic!

sewbeadit 04-03-2012 10:35 PM

I would use them all, they go great together.

Stitch124 04-04-2012 03:47 AM

My guess is the first 10 are vintage. The colors are so cheerful! I think they would all look fabulous together. Please post a pic when you're done, OK?

nhweaver 04-04-2012 03:54 AM

I love them all, new or old, blends or 100% cotton - they all will make a great quilt. As for the age, older fabrics were 36" wide, 44/45 were the last 30 years, and now 40/42 is becoming the norm.

Spotty 04-04-2012 03:55 AM

I love your vintage fabrics. I to love vintage fabric. They have such a comforting feeling. I hope to be starting a quilt using them shortly. Hope you will post a picture of your quilt when it's done.

krista 04-04-2012 03:59 AM

they are all beautiful fabrics! I say mix them!

jeaninmaine 04-04-2012 04:04 AM

I'd mix them all.

jitkaau 04-04-2012 04:09 AM

They all look very suitable together.

suzanprincess 04-04-2012 04:28 AM

I'd say the 7 on the left (upper) are vintage, and the peachy one in the middle, but darned if I can pick two more. I'm looking forward to finding out the answer, but regardless, they all look great together.

xsquilter 04-04-2012 04:54 AM

I would sure use them all together with no hesitation. They're lovely fabrics regardless of age & I'll bet they'll be fabulous together!
