I am making a practice OBW and used the left over hexes to piece the backing. Except for a seam to join the widths of fabric, I've never pieced a back before. I know that it's not going to be perfect, but I wanted the back to be as centered as possible, so I took a thumb tack & stuck it thru the center of the back, so when I layed the backing on the table, the point was up. I taped it down, put the batting on it then I found the center of the top & used the thumb tack to match it to the center of the back. Seems to have worked well. Is there a better way?

Sounds good to me. I'm interested to hear what others say.

i believe that is clever.....

I agree - that's very clever.

I think your solution is brilliant.

I would probably have pieced the backing, not worried about it, and just appliqued the hexes over the seam.

I've marked the center of each of the four sides, both backing and top. Taped backing down, put on batting, placed top with the four marks in the right places.

Your tack solution is much more elegant!!

(I'm just worried I'd step on it while spray-basting, lol! I'm such a klutz sometimes.)

Great idea.. My "Cry" quilt is where my fabric became twisted - off center and a little cocked to the left. I had no bunched fabric. Perfect machine quilting.. but the fabric back was not square.

I cried for days.. the quilt took 3 years. A hundred hexigons. I do wish you luck.
