Chalkboard Cloth/fabric
 

Has anyone ever used it before?

I have seen several projects with chalkboard pieces on them and would like to try them. I found some on JoAnn's but they are out of stock (shocking I know) and also found some on Fabric.com. Amazon has it also, that is carried by Fabric.com and the reviews are pretty good. But wondered if anyone here has used it and what you thought about it.

I bought some with no project in mind so it is yet to be used. However, I read somewhere that it isn't supposed to be washed. That what ever project you use it for, you should use velcro to hook it to it and remove it prior to washing the item.

Yes, I read it is not to be washed but wiped with a damp cloth. Most projects I have seen have had it tied on with twine, pinned, or velcro.

Just wondered how easy it is to use and if it really does work. Yes the reviews say it does but sometimes I like to hear from a place I know I can trust. KWIM?

I bought some several years ago when my kids were younger (they're teens now) and made busy-book type stuff for long car trips. Worked quite well. It is like a vinyl fabric so any pins will leave holes, you might want to use masking tape or clips like the quilt binding clips instead of pins and if you have to rip out stitching it will show. Auntpiggy is right, you're not supposed to wash it, just spot clean with a damp cloth if needed. Don't know why you can't wash it but I never tried. You'll need to "season" it like you do a new chalkboard before using - just rub it all over with the side of a piece of chalk and then wipe the dust off. It's actually pretty neat stuff and it does work like a chalkboard.

I made several "portable chalk boards" for kids a few years ago based on a pattern by Nancy Zieman. The kids loved it and the chalk fabric worked quite well. One mom would take them for her kids to draw on at a restaurant and always had wait staff and other customers stop by the table and ask about them! I think her kids just wore them out.

I bought some last year but haven't used it yet. Didn't know a person shouldn't wash it, good to know. Now, I am not sure what I bought it for!

Used it for a wall hanging/memo board for a teacher (my own design). Worked great. Watch for pins - use tape instead. Cannot rip out stitches either but otherwise sews great.
