I'm just getting into doing charity quilts and was wondering which patterns are used most.

what ever pattern the clearance fabric tells me it needs

4 patch is good, 9 patch. Strips Any pattern that you like and would be fast and easy. A large center fabric with 2 or 3 borders is nice too. This is a good time to work with colors and contrast. Just have fun with it.

I usually use a very simple and quick pattern such as Disappearing 9 Patch. I usually make it scrappy, such as blue and yellows with white, whatever I have enough of on hand to make the size needed. May in Jersey

I mostly use the alternating whole block and 4 patch that are 6.5" unfinished in a 5 x 6 block layout and a 1.5" inner border and a 3.5" outer border. That is the layout that Quilts for Kids sends out with their kits. You can get one pieced in a day, pretty easily. I also like it because they are narrow enough that you don't have to piece the back. There is enough around the edges to bring the back around to the front to make the binding. But I think I've seen pics posted of all kinds of patterns, so pick one you like and run with it.

Warm wishes is also a good pattern. We used that a lot in my quilt group in TX.

i use whichever design appeals to me at the moment. the quilt's final destination doesn't determine which fabric i use or which design.

some are very simple checkerboards, and some are very complex. it all depends on the mood i'm in.

I love the Warm Wishes pattern, too. Here's the link: http://www.quiltmaker.com/content_do...oubleSize.pdf.

Charity quilts are a good place to make blocks for something you are thinking of making in a larger size. You can see if you really like it enough to make hundreds of them (the blocks) and if your color ideas will work.

Most of mine are lap quilts. I normally do pinwheels and rail fence, both very versatile...can cut and sew these in my sleep. One of my LQS closed and I got some jelly rolls for $10.25 ea. So the last two I made using the jelly roll tute on here. Went together quickly and looks good.
