How hard is it to learn to do circles in a quilt???? They are done with a template, but I have never even thought about doing circles before....they intimidate me!
I have posted several pictures of the first wedding quilt for my oldest son that is getting married in March.I had to learn some new things for it, so I am willing to learn. Now, the youngest sons fiancee (getting married in June) has been looking at quilts and and really like this Earl Grey pattern. Anyone know where to find a free pattern so I can try some circles....and instructions, I have no clue how to do them. We haven't come to a final decision yet...I have to give the final approval since I will be making it. |

drunkards path is the block. i'm sure there are some free ones online. try www.quilterscache.com for one.
i taught my friend to do some and she caught on quickly. i fold the "pie" piece to find the center and crease it with my finger. then fold the "arc" piece to find center and crease it. then match the centers and pin there, then pin the ends/side corners and pin. then i tend to pin inbetween too and sew. usually sew them with the pie piece on top since it has more fabric to keep out of the way of the needle. i love doing them. give them a try, you'll love all the designs you can get with that block. http://www.mccallsquilting.com/qb/mc...505/index.html http://www.quilterscache.com/D/DrunkardsPathBlock.html http://lindafranz.com/product.php?productId=21 i got an acrylic template from backporchdesigns.com too http://www.backporchdesign.com/templates.htm i put some in the border of this quilt [ATTACH=CONFIG]255247[/ATTACH] |

One of the first large quilts I made was using the backporchdesign template... it's acrylic... I even emailed the designer and she emailed right back to answer my question... it's been years, so I'm a little fuzzy and the templates are in the basement and I'm upstairs... (sorry) but the curves were actually very easy! I made a queen sized quilt out of batiks for my daughter and it turned out very pretty... Mine did not have the organization of the gray one , but was the same ida...

You could always go down the applique method as I did in this quilt for my son's wedding:

I will talk you through the process using freezer paper if you like the design. I got the idea from a quilting magazine which had a simpler block layout than what I did. I found this went together really easily and there is no wastage of fabric, as you trim out the backing and can re-use on another block as I did :-D |
