I am a new quilter (less than a year), have just joined the Civil War Club at the local quilt shop. Sort of started a little late, but was told it is ongoing. The ladies showed their blocks for the month and as we were assigned this month's blocks I learned that they had all used the EQ 6 program to print the block pattern for foundation piecing. Did not know about this program until now... Has anyone pieced this block without the EQ 6 and how did you do it? (sort of overwhelmed by this):(.

Hi Daisy...I haven't pieced the block you are referring to, but I'm sure that its possible to piece it without EQ6. EQ is only a computer software program that helps you design quilts. Some patterns are drawn with the EQ program, thus you can easily print them out. I'm assuming that all the other ladies have bought the CD with the quilt patterns on them. You will need to purchase the pattern for the quilt in some form. That doesn't mean that you must print the foundation pattern on your computer. You can trace it onto a light tracing paper and use that as your foundation pattern. You could draw your own patterns using something as simple as your Paint program on your computer. There are many ways to do it...you don't have to have EQ. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you, makes me feel better, like it is 'doable' without the program at this point.

I use the freezer paper method. Draw your pattern on the paper size and fold back on the lines. Sew next to the lines and press. No ripping paper or pulling out thread.

Maybe one of people in the club could print the foundation for you. It is worth asking and quicker than making your own.

Hey, I'll do most anything for a quilter ... and if they want to treat me to coffee and a muffin, all the better.

The block we are assigned this time will be "Benefits of the Sick and Wounded". There is a copy of the block in the book, I think I can scan it and go from there, I guess the EQ 6 program just makes it easier to paper piece. I did try looking it up on the internet and did not find the pattern. Think I just need to take that first step ....

Yup, just take the plunge. You'll figure it out. I'm sure that one of the ladies in the group would print for you...but you would still need to buy the pattern in some form..the book or something so you aren't violating the copyright laws. Blocks really aren't hard to draw, so ....please post your blocks when you finish..we'd love to admire them!
