does anyone do these civil wars quilts that Ive been seeing in quilting catalogs? I love the colors. So homey and comforting.

I have not pieced one but I am quilting one for someone right now. Seeing it makes me want to do one for myself and the civil war repro prints have really grown on me.

I am currently working on "The Long Road Home" quilt for my son. I can't tell you how much easier my life is when I decided to order the 'kit'. Having to pick out all those fabrics myself....well, let's just say the LQS might not be OPEN long enough for me to make all those decisions :-D

Have some kits and BOMs. Haved done a couple of quilts. Love the colors and fabrics. Especially Jo Morton.

The quilt was a Block of the Month club (BOM) through my friends Local Quilt Shop (LQS).

The quilting designs I am using I designed myself using Victorian motifs and some stencils that have that same sort of look. No pattern involved for the quilting.

Here are links to pictures I posted:

this is the pattern that our quilt guild uses to make the Minnesota wounded warrior quilts. http://www.coloradohobquiltproject.com/history.htm We try to make sure every wounded soldier or family of a lost soldier gets one. it's a very rewarding project and they are very well received. we usually use darker colors than the example.

Barbara Brackman has been offering free Civil War blocks (along with the history) every Saturday on her Civil War Blog.
This will continue for a full year. This Saturday will be block #28.
Google Barbara Brackman Civil War Blog and scroll down to see all of the blocks, which are still available. These are 8 1/2" blocks and fun to make. I love the CW fabrics also.

Enjoy!

I too love these quilts, but they don't match any of my decor so I haven't attempted one.

I have *always* told beginning quilters and others to design a room around a quilt rather than the other way around....the quilt will still be wonderful 50 years from now; the room will have been redecorated 10 times!!

If you love them, make them for Pete's sake; quilts have more to do with hugs and warmth and cuddles and art than home decoration! :-D

Jo Morton's website shows her Civil War quilts and books. Kim Diel uses Civil War prints in most of her quilts if you look close. She spins them with applique for a more modern look, love it. The new magazine, Primitive Quilts and Projects (love it) has almost all Civil war fabrics. It has a website and it's second issue is due out in August. The first has several wonderful quilts. Check it out.

honeybee_2000 07-14-2011 11:20 AM

I dont make quilts to go with my decor..lol Ive got all white walls so everything goes. When I make quilts for others though like say for gifts, then I am fussy with a quilts colors. Im just a happy go lucky quilt bug..lol

If you're asking about the picture on page one, it's made from Churn Dash and plain squares.

I've been following the Barbara Brackman Civil War blog and the Flickr group, too. I look forward to seeing the new block each week, although sometimes I lag at getting them made.

I'm doing two CW era repro quilts at my LQS - one is nothing but HST's and the other is starch method applique. I have three more I started on my own in various stages.

I agree with Jan - make the quilt and decorate around it! :)
