Colors and textures for a stained glass butterfly quilt
 

I want the best results but I don't think I understand the process.

I really want my quilt to look like a stained glass window. I'm going to use it as a window quilt. Here are the considerations.

The room is done in yellow through bluegreen.
The neutrals used in the room are brown and cream.
I would like the butterfly quilt to be in the same color scheme.

Now should I choose all botique fabrics so they look like stained glass?
I'm partial to fabrics that have metalic in them, could I use them? If so should they be in the butterfly or in the "glass" parts of the design?
How do I get the "glow" in the stained glass quilt?

When I was doing actual stained glass work, the thing that was emphasized was to make your color selections using the actual light conditions where it will be installed. In other words, if you were making something that will be placed in a window with the sun shining thru, then make your glass selection by holding the colors up to the window (or use a light table). I would do the same with the fabrics. Cut small pieces and tape them to the window to judge what they will look like. The tricky part with something that will be back lit sometimes and sometimes be front lit (like at night) is making it look good in both situations.

Be sure and think about the seam allowances showing through too. If you are placing in a north window it will last a lot longer than a south or west facing window. Good luck and show us a picture when you are finished!!

I window quilt will have a layer of rubberized backing, a backing material, a batting and then the quilt top. There won't be any light comming through.

Sounds like this will be an impressive quilt. I would think that metalic fabric would be impressive in the butterfly - maybe fairy frost for some of the lights in the window - that could give it a "glow"
