Come Quilt wit me Today - 8/19 (Sorry it's late!!)

Sorry this is so late everyone!! And thanks to krista who started a thread for me, but I figured I'd start one myself since most people look for one from me. Late night last night and I slept in. :) :) :)

So no rules for today!! Just tell us what your goals are (were) then come back here throughout the day and tell us how you are doing and check in on everyone else too. That's it!! :) :) A fun way to get some sewing done and get some of those projects finished up.

My goal for today is to work on my applique quilt that I started quite some time ago.

So what are you working on today?

Cheers!
Rachel

I'm hand quilting a High Stepping" wallhanging for a great niece.

labeelady 08-19-2012 07:13 AM

I'll be working on a border and sandwiching my latest twister project. After that I really need to sort out fabric and pull out what I need for for another project. Or maybe I can start machine quilting something.

auntpiggylpn 08-19-2012 07:18 AM

I'm starting really late today! I have a quilt that I will be gifting on Friday that needs the binding sewn to the back. I am a machine binder but I really like the looks of hand binding so I am going to bite the bullet on this one and sew it on by hand. I have it all folded over and Clover Clipped. I need to work on some doggie neckerchiefs for MIL's therapy dog. Have to leave in a couple hours to let said doggie out.

Pam B 08-19-2012 07:30 AM

Today I will finish 2 of my Stitcher's Garden blocks and also finish my granddaughter's quilt. May also take a nap since I have a terrible head cold.

Raggiemom 08-19-2012 07:33 AM

Good morning all! My goals for today are to finish machine binding 3 quilts, finish a doll quilt, attach borders to the Irish Mist quilt, and finish the quilt top from Accent on Angles.

frustratedquilter40 08-19-2012 07:50 AM

Good Morning everyone! I need to work on some swap blocks today while it is cool i my sewing room has no air cond. and it has finally cooled off. Anyways I had to create a paper piece pattern based on a regular pieced block pattern pieces took me most of yesterday(do not usually do this) but needed to make this block. Long story short I have 1 quarter of the block completed will post a pick if I get the block done.
Happy Sewing Everyone!!

Hoping my thread will die quietly, now that Rachel has started the official one. So I'm cross posting my plea for help on this thread.

I just pulled out all the finished blocks for my BOM, and I discovered that I have sewed half of my connecting blocks together in mirror image Now I have to decide - redesign the quilt, or do a *lot* of ripping. Help! please look below, and tell me which you prefer. The blue/red block in the upper row is reversed in the 2 pictures. Do you like the symmetrical alternating light/dark (pic 1), or the all dark (pic 2) around the middle block?

Sounds like everyone is off to a good start!! I can't wait to see pics!!

Rachel

athenagwis 08-19-2012 07:59 AM

Ooooh Krista I love the blocks!! :) I wouldn't change them (but unsewing gives me hives, so that may just be me) I think you can find a nice way to still make them work!!

I have a baby quilt (warm wishes) started that I would like to get sandwiched today. Have to fit packing for camping into the day and later time at the motorcycle races, but will check in and out throughout to see how everyone else is doing. Thanks for organizing these days, they're fun!

Swan Song 08-19-2012 08:04 AM

I have been washing and ironing fabrics for my Christmas projects since o'dark thirty. I have all the fabric for 5 Bow Tucks and 1 wall quilt done. Almost all the batik for a lap quilt done. I do have a binding to sew on a UFO that was one of my very first class projects. It's a small log cabin wall quilt. All quilted I just never put binding on. I may do that while more fabric is washing. Then it's to cutting all those Bow Tucks. Of course I may get side tracked and start on some blocks for another lap quilt, the center is all pre-cuts and it has been calling my name! LOL

nygal 08-19-2012 08:06 AM

I am beginning to work on a batik fabric Sampler that is paper pieced and shown in Alex Anderson's updated paper piecing book. It's on the back cover of her book. I can't find a picture to link here.

There's a difference?

That's what I was thinking they look identical to me.

Raggiemom 08-19-2012 08:33 AM

Krista, I like picture 2 better.

Well, I have 4 of my 6 items done but they were the quick ones! The binding is done on the 3 quilts and I have the doll quilt done (even if it does look like a place mat!).

I have to tell you that when I look at the pictures, I see no difference. Now that you pointed it out, I can find it. It is pleasing to the eye either way!

Swan Song 08-19-2012 08:47 AM

I also see it now Krista. I really had to look for it so unless it bothers you I would just carry on.

Just joining.

I got my boomerang 8 fabric's all folded and stuffed into envelopes to mail out tomorrow. Can't wait to start getting the F8's from folks to start making blocks!

The remainder of the day I'm going to do some applique on the baby quilt I'm working on. Pic below is sneak peek of one of the bunny's already completed. The butterfly is not done yet.

The bunny was done with MUV's method of laying the applique fabric (plaid) on top of the quilt, then over that a sheet of paper (golden threads paper) with the image I want appliqued. I then stitch on the lines to get the bunny shape (I use a very small stitch). I then peel the paper away, and cut the plaid fabric around the bunny shape. I then added a few color contrasting spots on the bunny - this part is needle turn applique (ears, eye patch, and belly patch) using a batik. I then stitch around the edge with wool yarn. Then I frayed the edges of the bunny. All of the bunnies are different shapes, plaids, and I used a variety of stitches around the edge.

Off to my garden bench on this BEAUTIFUL day to sit and listen to a book while I stitch bunnies!!

Swan Song 08-19-2012 09:09 AM

Heather your quilts are great! Sue the bunny is so cute, can't wait to see the rest.

kristakz 08-19-2012 09:15 AM

Just taking a quick break for lunch and checking in. I'm almost done 1 star block of my BOM. These paper pieced stars take *forever* to make. I looked again at the blue/reds, and I have enough leftover fabric from the earlier months, to remake the 3 blocks that are different so far. So I'll do that, and try to keep it consistent from here on out. Only pain is, the 3 "wrong" ones are attached to other blocks, so I do have some unstitching to do. This just reaffirms for me why I never attach my blocks into rows until they are completely done.

quiltingjester 08-19-2012 09:16 AM

Krista, those are very pretty!

franc36 08-19-2012 09:24 AM

Went to early church so I'd have more time for quilting. I had planned to cut out a quilt top; but decided to do an appliqué BOM that I had been putting off. So far, the appliqué is going well. I think I'll be able to complete the block today. Monday, I'll start on the quilt top.

DebraK 08-19-2012 09:24 AM

I really enjoy seeing all the work going on. Neato projects!

This is one I've been working on between other quilts, meant to bust the smaller scraps. I plan on adding a least 2 more columns today, like you see at the bottom.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ted/001-14.jpg

I've also started making these birds from a little tutorial I found at the Patchery Menagerie site. Not sure what the end game will be yet, but I've been trying to make one every day just for fun. They make me smile.

DogHouseMom 08-19-2012 09:29 AM

Debra

Love the scrappy stars and those birds are to die for!! Can you share the site where you got those? A row of those would be great in a sampler quilt where a rectangle block is needed - instead of the usual flying geese!

Raggiemom 08-19-2012 09:31 AM

Sue, your bunny is adorable.

Krista, great way to use scraps and I love the birds.

I can't quite finish the Irish Mist top today. The fabric I had picked out for the outside border is just too bright for the muted colors of the quilt. My husband and I actually both agreed on that. So I'll need to run to the quilt shop tomorrow and pick up a light peachy batik I think.

DebraK 08-19-2012 09:38 AM

here is the birdie tutorial: http://patcherymenagerie.blogspot.co...rd-how-to.html

The scrap quilt idea I got from some lovely poster here. I wish I could remember her name to give her the credit. Unfortunately, I don't have her post saved.

Picture of the Irish Mist quilt so far. From the Six Halves Make a Whole book.

Krisb 08-19-2012 09:46 AM

My goals for today:

1. Finish a sea turtles panel that is a gift for friends moving full time to Florida. Dinner is Tuesday, so this is "must do". Currently mulling over how to quilt the borders and whether to use crystals as air bubbles in the turtules's wake.
2. Cut strips for tumbling block mini.
3. Cut and, I hope, sew last set of Civil WR blocks for swap. Get them ready to mail.
4. Prepare appliqué for monthly swap block. Finish if time allows.
5. Post picture of doll quilt Lisa sent me.
6. Do some thread painting on the landscape I am currently working on. This needs to wait until DH goes to play golf because the appliqué foot on the zigzag machine is noisy and it is in the dining room, because the "big" machine is out in the sewing room.

Turtle quilt so far:

Raggiemom, you are amazing to have such a long list and stay with it. The Irish Mist quilt is wonderful. Debra, I love the scrappy stars. You all are doing amazing work.

For me, I have a baby quilt that's not needed until September 15, so I'm ahead of the game. It's just a feature fabric with log cabin type strips all on one side. I imagine there's another name for that. I'll put some more stripss on it and then put the blocks on the design wall. I also need to find a pattern for a casserole carrier for a craft workshop tomorrow. I want to make a sample today.

DogHouseMom 08-19-2012 10:18 AM

Thanks for the link Deb - I've pinned it.

love the tortoise!!

Got chased inside to work by rain. Neighbor came over and we were sitting on the garden bench and he said "I wonder if it will rain". A few seconds later I felt the first drop. We didn't think it would last, or be heavy and we stayed out in the rain quite a while chatting. Finally we came inside and within seconds it started pouring!!

Hmmm ... guess I can turn the sprinkler off :)

Back to the bunnies!

One block done. Problem is, I reinstalled my printer drivers, and forgot that the default setting on the printer is "shrink to fit". So my templates are 1/4" too small :( It looks like I have enough "extra" fabric on the outside edges to stretch this to a full 12" block - it just won't have sharp points on the turquoise border. Hopefully it will still look OK, because I don't have enough fabric to redo this one.

Now I need a break from paper piecing, so I think I'll jump to the end of my list for today, and piece the backing for a quilt to go onto the longarm.

Almost forgot all about this......just got back from a long bike ride. Someone has to hold the back of that motorcycle down and point out the ice cream stands..........Before the day is through, I need to bind a lap quilt for my best friend's birthday. Will post when it's done.

irishrose 08-19-2012 11:53 AM

Raggiemom, thank you. It's perfect. I had found a similar one, but it used D rings. As these are to be sold for a profit for mission work, the cloth rings will keep costs down. I want to make a few flat fold up ones for 9X13s, to, but I can find a pattern for that easily.

I finished the Scattered Roses quilt top from the Accent of Angles book (I don't know why they call it that, it only works if you use rose fabric!). After supper, I may sandwich the quilt. I think I need to sew together a few pieces of batting though. The second picture is of my helper, Selkie. Quilting with Mommy is exhausting!

Krisb 08-19-2012 12:56 PM

This is my progress on thread painting the landscape. Squared it up and then realized that the tree still needs some more "sunlit" sections on it, but already put the zigzag machine away, so they will be straighht stitch. This will be the first time I tried to free motion on my Janome, so we will see how it goes. The grass really isn't quite that wonky, but the thread caught the light and it really stands out, so you can see all the "issues".

Raggiemom, the Irish Mist is just beautiful, and krista, those blocks will look good no matter how you put them together.
