I would like to use up some of my scraps but how do I start? I have never made a quilt and don't know how to 'put the whole thing together". Can I just cut squares and make a " grab bag " to pull from? I see so many beautiful quilts and I am afraid of making something that looks like junk. Any and all comments will help and maybe give me some confidence to start. Marz

First off, welcome. There's lots of good information here.
Have you tried www.quiltville.com? Bonnie Hunter has many nice free patterns for scrap quilts there. Perhaps they will give you some ideas.

one quick question...how did you get scraps?
if your scraps are scraps of cotton fabrics (for us usually left overs from our project quilts) you can sort your scraps into lights & darks- then start piecing- as long as you have some contrast they will come together beautifully-
you may want to spend some time browsing through the pictures- then do a search for scrappy quilts- and look at more pictures- there are thousands of quilt pictures to inspire you!

First thing is fabric content. Then Color and contrasts. Google scrappy quilts. Google string quilts. This should give you ideas of the variety of quilts you can make. Then look at your scraps - and cut accordingly.

Is this a chicken before the egg question? Newbie with scraps? LOL

Part of the answer probably depends on what kind of scraps you have. Are they all cotton, quilting fabric? If not, you can still make a quilt, but the techniques and designs might be limited by your fabric. Are your scraps big pieces? Strips? Small bits? All will work, but in different ways.

start small------a table runner is a good place to start--look in your area for a quilter teacher or group---after several years i am still learning also if you know "the rules" you can with confidence break them--there are many tricks to make things easier
