Is anyone a creator of a chapter of a national charity? Or have you created a chapter of "quilts for kids"? I've been sewing for them for months and am thinking that it would be fun and rewarding to start a chapter...but I wonder if it would be overwhelming? Any thoughts?

I wrote to them about starting a local chapter when I sent for 7 of their kits (for me and other ladies in my guild). After reading the information we decided it was better for us to keep on donating to charities in our local area. We already have non-profit status, so we don't need a parent organization to supply that. QFK deducts a 10% administration fee, and yet the local chapter is responsible for their own fund raising (all donation checks being sent to headquarters). And then there are various rules, like putting the QFK label (purchased from headquarter) on everything. I thoroughly understand their need for the fees and rules, and I think QFK is a very good organization. However, forming a local chapter was not the right move for my guild. Instead we have a member who actively seeks out all kinds of different opportunities for quilt-giving in our local community, to all age groups and different types of organizations.

I considered starting a local chapter also, but due to the same reasons as dunster, I decided not to.

Maybe you should try to see if your area has a Project Linus group.

I don't know much about charities and admin fees, but if you have to fundraise to buy your own materials and pay QFK for the labels, what is the 10% for?

It was a good thought. Just keep doing to quilts. They go for such a good cause.

I'm still doing the "quilts for kids" and I always send back their completed kit with another quilt out of my own stash. Not having a local chapter means that none of my work goes to my community. But it is a great cause.

I am just now finishing my first quilt for QFK. After signing up at Downy I found one chapter in GA where I live so I emailed the coordinator and she sent me a kit also. If you go to the QFK site you can click on your state to see where you have chapters located. Mine is in SE GA, I'm in NW GA. but the quilts stay in your state. The woman in charge told me that if you have a hospital in your area that you can give quilts to by all means do it.They just ask that you take a picture of you and the recipient and mail it to them. She offered to send me extra labels if I decide to do that.There are other members of my group that live closer to me that donate to hospitals in Atlanta and the surrounding area, closer to where I live. If I choose to mail my quilts to them, they can donate along with others. Also Hospice.
There are several ways to get your quilts in your area without starting a chapter.
Just thought I would add my 2 cents in on the subject.
