There are a lot of good conversations about how to make rag quilts on this forum. Some only use a few colors, some many. Depends on what you like. Do a search on this site for rag quilts. Lots of good info,

Like Nora said there have been several topics on here about how to make a rag quilt. I just finished three of them and have started a fourth. I use 7 in squares and 1/2 in seam. You can use as many colors as you like. I used two in my first one. The second one has 3 and the third one has lots of different fat quarters. They go together really fast. The hardest part about making a rag quilt is snipping all of the seam after it is sewn together. I suggest that you purchase a pair of Fiskards spring action rag snips. It will really save on your hands. If you run into any problems just pm me and I'll be glad to help.

Tara,

I used 11 different colors in mine. I personally prefer using flannel as the batting, this way you can cut it the same size as your block and go on. If you prefer not to purchase any material, you could always use scraps. The good thing about rag quilts is that they are fast and easy and completely unique. Have fun making your rag quilt, if you have any questions feel free to ask. :D

I constructed my first this summer using a pattern I found in a quilting magazine. The blocks were 8 1/2 inches with a 7 1/2 btting. I made mine of flannel and it is very cozy. My first was 56 blocks with 7 different colours, each colour had it's own quilted design. I am now helping a friend make one qith 10 different colours. We have been having problems getting 10 different colours to all go together though. So as has already been said, you get to choose how many colours you want but remember it may be easier to go looking for fabric and buy it all together at the same time so that they will all match.

I used 10 different colors in my rag quilt. It has 120 blocks. I started out with some material I had bought at Wal-Mart a long time ago. Then, halfway through, I ran out. I went to Wal-Mart hoping to find something to match. I didn't, but I did find something similar with flowers, it doesn't really match but the way I put it together, it looks like it flows nicely. Then, as I was just almost out of material again, I realized I wanted a border around mine, I used 2 different colors for the border. Here is the picture of mine.
