I bought this cute pattern from LQS. It is made from 2 FQ's. Thought it might be something cute to make and a friend said she could sell them at craft shows (but we didn't discuss price yet).

I figured the cost to make as follows:
2 FQ's: 2.50
Binding: 2.00
Batting: .50
At this point, I'm at $5 in cost. If I make handles from the FQ material there is no additional cost but I would have to piece them. For my first one I bought some chain from the hardware store and it cost me over $6 for 3 feet (it was brass). I wove fabric between the chain links (that was a chore). Now I have to buy velcro to sew on for closures and then 2 buttons.

I am stuck because I don't know how to price them. My first one I would probably charge $20-$25 (depending on the buttons) and there is no way I would pay that if I were a customer. I'll just enjoy using this first one myself.

So, if I use buttons from my collection and just add the price of velcro, I'm guessing $12-$15. I can't post pics of the bag/purse now but will tomorrow. Too dark to take pictures.

I'm wondering how to figure out pricing.

I'm thinking no less than $15. Buttons can get expensive even if you are using them from your collection

trust me, too costly to sell,,,AND did you read the disclosure on that pattern..you might not be able to sell items made from it in the first place without asking the designer for permission!
The other thing, does it need to be velro...I would not buy a velcro purse/bag/tote...unless it was for a kid and then I would not pay more than $8-$10 for it....

I thought copyright laws only apply to the pattern itself???

It can apply to the pattern AND can apply to selling it. Have to read the fine print

NoPE these days the designers have claim to what you do with what you make using their design...don't get me started...BUT you do have to read the fine print on every pattern, or err to the designer and write for permission...or try going to their website, some have it listed there....some are bucking the trend and proudly stating do what you want, but others are kicking and screaming...honestly....going to stop now...and pack orders, I love selling stuff!

If you do end up making them and selling them you must charge for your buttons, at some point you purchased them even if not bought for this particular project. I agree that often I make things and think no one would pay so much for an item, but they are paying for your talent as well. So basically don't sell too cheap, I'm sure your purse is worth it's full value.

I thought about the magnet closures but those get expensive too. Drat.

That's true because most of my buttons are old and I inherited them. Some are still on the original "Kerns's" and "Kresge" store cards plus those cut off of old clothing. I thought about having some of them checked out but don't know where to go to do that. Bought a book on "Old Buttons" and got totally confused. I know some of these buttons would be worth more than the purses. Sold a few buttons 5 years ago for $25. Another topic for discussion. Guess I should buy new for the purses.
