My daughter is getting married this summer. She has asked me to make a "country " quilt as a wedding gift. She wants darker colors - rusts, browns, blues, greens, etc. I need help with a pattern. What do you consider a "country" quilt?

erstan947 01-03-2011 07:46 AM

If it was my daughter (I don't have one) I would choose 3 or 4
patterns that were in my skills comfort zone and ask her to choose the one she likes best. The words "country" bring to my mind the traditional quilts I grew up with. Just my 2 cents worth.:)

Mattee 01-03-2011 08:01 AM

I agree. I also think of designers like Thimbleberries or maybe Kim Diehl.

Country and darker colors make me think of homespuns. Maybe a strippy quilt made with an assortment of homespuns. Like erstan947, I would recommend that you show a sample to your daughter before investing a lot of time and money, just in case that was not what she had in mind. If you are like my daughter and I, my interpretation of what she elaborately describes to me is frequently way off the mark.

kathy 01-03-2011 08:15 AM

country is my middle name! I think of dresden plates, churn dash, 9 patch, and lots of applique

JulieR 01-03-2011 08:19 AM

Churn dash and 9 patch for sure, maybe Grandmother's Fan or Flower Garden?

Murphy 01-03-2011 08:21 AM

Try a Thimbleberry pattern.

adyldrop 01-03-2011 08:29 AM

definitely go with a kansas troubles fabric line from moda....great country colors!! you can do any pattern...maybe a log cabin with stars?? scrumptious in countryish colors!!

laceybritt 01-03-2011 08:36 AM

I think of log cabins, Irish chain, and any traditional quilt pattern.

Jan in VA 01-03-2011 08:39 AM

Definitely log cabin!

Gwyn 01-03-2011 08:40 AM

I think of D9P or any quilt done with squares or strips. I wonder what a double wedding ring (traditional wedding quilt) done with a darker background and lighter ring pieces might look like.

jodimarie 01-03-2011 09:07 AM

your daughters color choices just ''scream'' LOG CABIN!!! her color choices on the dark side with creams on the light side. there are a lot of really great layout choices....maybe let her choose the one she likes best!!

nativetexan 01-03-2011 09:09 AM

see if your library has a book by Thimbleberries and have her look it over for one that meets what she is thinking of.

thepolyparrot 01-03-2011 09:10 AM

Yes, the Kansas Troubles lines are so beautiful and so country! I second the nomination!

Likewise the mention of Kim Diehl - I just got her latest book before Christmas and it's eye candy on every page. She does a lot of applique', though - do you like applique'?

Does she mean "country" as in "traditional?" Or country as in "primitive?"

RkayD 01-03-2011 09:19 AM

Look up some of Lynette Jennings stuff. She's good.

Yup, I was also going to suggest using the Kansas Troubles...it is country, through and through. My favorite.

Mattee 01-03-2011 09:27 AM

Did you mean Lynette Jensen? I can't find the other.

I think of homey feelings, patchwork, log cabin... earthy colors, greens, browns, tans

ann clare 01-03-2011 11:44 AM

Log cabin or yellow brick road would be my choices.

mic-pa 01-03-2011 12:12 PM

Thimbleberries would be my choice in browns, greens, beige etc.

117becca 01-03-2011 12:34 PM

Definitely agree w/ picking 3 or 4 patterns and let her pick. Maybe she can go w/ you to pick out fabrics or pull up a collection online??

Log Cabin Pattern

Aurora 01-04-2011 03:40 AM

Log Cabin has always been my idea of a country quilt. But I agree pick three or four patterns you are comfortable with and let her select which pattern.

The fabric selections would go a long way in making any quilt a country quilt. I can also see a Nine Patch or a Quick Quarter.

2manyprojects 01-04-2011 05:50 AM

I would tell her to go online and pick a few patterns and then "surprise" her that way

duckydo 01-04-2011 06:22 AM

I agree with Kathy, and done in earth tones

inletjerry 01-04-2011 06:42 AM

There are some beautiful ones on "Connecting Threads" this month.

jme 01-04-2011 06:50 AM

I think log cabin or 9p.

julia58 01-04-2011 07:00 AM

I also agree with getting 3 or 4 patterns together and let the bride choose which she would like. Have fun.

I would use a different pattern for each block, your color choice is what will make it a country feel quilt.

You could make this a sampler and pick blocks that would describe the couple. I see you are from Illinois, "Illinois roads", "Lincoln's Platform", a block about the Prairie all come to mind. My SIL is in marketing so Market to Market was used in theirs as well as a "Wedding Bouquet" block. And all the fabric lines suggested are great.

mshawii 01-04-2011 09:59 AM

How about the Maple leaf pattern. Jan

kittykatz2001 01-04-2011 10:00 AM

Your avatar is a block that I have been wanting to make. I've seen a photo but do not know what it's called. Can you tell me what it is and where I can get it? Thanks, kitty

This is for PWinston. Sorry I didn't state that before.

IBQUILTIN 01-04-2011 11:45 AM

I would bet she means scrappy. Show her some pics and see which way she leans

starshine 01-04-2011 12:50 PM

I would check with her about what she means by country. she might mean certain style like scrappy, or tranditional patterns, or she might mean certain colors. Perhaps planning it together might be fun.

I created a country/wilderness quilt for my daughter. I used log cabin, maple leaves, pine trees, and others to file it in.

(Hopeful my picture will come through.)

Maurene 01-04-2011 03:56 PM

Maybe an old Mennonite or Amish pattern, Bears Pay, Goose Tracks, Delectable Mountains?

craftymatt2 01-04-2011 03:58 PM

I agree with Log Cabin, If I'm not mistaken the middle square of the log cabin is for the "Hearth" of the home, I think the log cabin symbolizes the home really well.
