I just use a DSM for my quilting and don't know anything about the long arms. Some will be along shortly and can answer your questions.

I bought a used homemade frame that uses a DSM from craigs list about a year ago. the womens husband had made it for her but she finally got a longarm. I love, love, love it. There was a learning curve but really was no problem. I can load and complete the quilting in less time than it took me to baste a quilt. NO MORE BASTING, its great.

How does that work? I have no space for a long arm but I want to machine quilt up to queen size quilts. How do you do it with a DSM? Can you send me a pic? |
I love my Hinty frame. It is so stable. Have fun.

Check the Hinterberg website. Their frames come in two different sizes. One fits the harp on DSM machines; the other is for deeper harps such as the Voyager 17 midarm. I know you can't fit a larger machine on the smaller carriage; don't know if the larger carriage works with the usual harp size of a DSM (about 8 or 9", I think). In any case, it's a great price!

thanks for all the positive responses. i believe Prism that this is for DSM....but will ask. i should be bringing it home in a week or two....

We have a Hinterberg frame and like it. It came with our used Voyager 17 and we traded only the machine in for a Fun quilter from Nolting and it fits on my Hinty frame. We would have liked to get the metal frame also but we saved $2000 by keeping the Hinty. It is a good frame, very sturdy.

A vintage Singer 201 has an 8.5 inch harp, and you can usually find them for less than $100 on Craigslist. Worth the money if you only have a standard machine with a 4-7 inch harp. Enjoy your new frame.

thank you feathers! that's great advice. i have a new viking tribute 140c....but not really sure i want to use that for machine quilting on the frame....any thoughts on that?

It's a great frame and you got it for a great price. Before I got a voyager I used a vintage singer with the hand control. It worked really well.

so is a singer 201 good at quilting? is that harp longer than most?

I bought a Hinterberg frame from a friend who had purchased it from someone who was moving. My friend had set it up but never actually used it and I suspect that the woman she bnought it from rarely used it eiither. I picked it up for $300. I am embarassed to say that it is sitting in a corner of my basement and I have not even tried to set it up (I've had it for at least a year.) I also have 2 singer 201's- one my mother used daily which sits in a cabinet and 1 my dad had picked up at a rummage years ago for $1- also runs great but need to purchase a darning foot for it. Feathers, you may have motivated me to put the 2 together and quilt on a frame! I suppose I'll ask myself what took so long!!!!

I have a Juki on my Hinterberg frame. Love the combination!
