Crazy Quilting

I just joined a crazy quilt group. I have no idea what subject to do it on. Has anyone done one of these? Would love some suggestions. TY

SueDor 02-01-2013 03:04 AM

Sorry I can't help but I am sure someone will have an answer. I never did a crazy quilt, but I didn't think they had a subject to it.

patchsamkim 02-01-2013 04:01 AM

I made a crazy quilt Christmas stocking...it was fun making it...are you using traditional fabrics? or wools? I have seen some wonderful wool-crazy projects and that is on my list to try sometime.

mimiknoxtaylor 02-01-2013 04:06 AM

I've made a crazy quilt just using up scraps. I didn't get fancy & it was a quilt for a grandson when he was little.
As far as the subject question do you mean something like, "grandmother's gloves, picture, etc"?

Daylesewblessed 02-01-2013 04:26 AM

I do sew and flip blocks, which look like crazy quilt blocks. Mine have a theme or a focus fabric in the center of the block. I have done Snoopy, frogs, and other children's fabrics for the focus fabric. Right now I am making a quilt with old embroidery pieces from pillowcases as the focus fabric and vintage fabric scraps all around. This one will definitely have the "feel" of an authentic crazy quilt, but I do not plan to do the embellishments.

Jackie Spencer 02-01-2013 04:28 AM

I have made several crazy quilt items. Vests stockings, wall hangings and quilts. I think she means theme. I use cottons and velvets, silks, satins, I have even used fabrics from those big apolstery books, and yes I do use the cottons with them. I use pearls, beads, silk ribbon all kinds of flosses, appliques, doilies, laces and fancy trims. I have bought everything for an oriental themed one but have not started it yet. Beautiful oriental fabrics, oriental charms, sasiko mirrors. Here is a web site for you to browse. You will love it! EveningStar Designs. Have fun!!

rootyr 02-01-2013 04:36 AM

Jackie, TY so much for that site. Being a newbie to this it sure is a great site for ideas.

Jackie Spencer 02-01-2013 04:40 AM

If you google crazy quilting, all kinds of crazy quilting web sites will come up. You will see some beautiful work, and places to get your crazy quilting supplies.

Jackie Spencer 02-01-2013 04:43 AM

You are so welcome. Crazy quilting is my passion, I have been quilting since the mid 70's, and I love it, but crazy Quilting is my favorite.

rootyr 02-01-2013 04:50 AM

I will do that T so much!

rootyr 02-01-2013 04:52 AM

My instructor has been doing it for a long time also. She has taken classes from many wonderful instructors. She is leaving on the 10th to go to Williamsburg VA for a class with Ellie Sankievich (Sp) How cool is that!

Jackie Spencer 02-01-2013 05:07 AM

Lucky lady!! Sounds like you will have a good teacher, with lots of knowledge to share. I sent you a PM.

Sewflower 02-01-2013 05:16 AM

I not sure what you are asking. I'm working on one that I call "My Life" each block represents something or someone in my life

Here is one I made. I had back then recently purchased an embroidery machine and wanted to use a lot of the designs that I loved. So I used some velvet fabrics etc. I love Victorian things so I was sort of going for that theme. The back of it is a thin weight black courdory fabric that already had red roses embroidered on it!! That was a wonderful "find" for me at the fabric store at the time.

Be sure and Google Crazy Quilts on images and you'll get to see tons of ideas. There are many wonderful Crazy Quilt books out there too...I have them all.

rootyr 02-01-2013 06:59 AM

That is beautiful!! Kudos to you!

Crazy quilting was the style that my grandmother used to make utility quilts for the home in the 1800's. She sewed hers to a foundation fabric . This predated Victorian Era quilts and she used it because since it didn't have a pattern and was made from scraps of odd, non-matching left over fabric and went together so fast it was her choice for utility quilts. Of course then all quilts were bedding but the utility quilts went under the pretty ones and since the fire was banked in the stove at night the house got cold enough to freeze water and you slept under several quilts. Just an odd bit of information that I remember her telling me. She was born in 1867 and didn't marry until she was 40.

Dolphyngyrl 02-01-2013 08:24 AM

I think a crazy quilt would make a great memory quilt out of clothes

rootyr 02-02-2013 03:08 AM

Tanyal, love to hear those stories. TY for sharing.

TY all for your wonderful responses. I am even more excited now.
Hugs, Ruth

You're welcome. It was great listening to her tell about growing up during Reconstruction in the South. Her father was a judge who traveled on a circuit and she was raised by a woman who had been a former slave, but stayed with the family when the slaves were freed. Her mother had died at childbirth I think. Her father married a woman her age when she was in her early 20's and the shame of that made her leave home to live with her brother. He was a doctor who had 12 children and don't you know a spinster sister was a welcome help in taking care of those kids. She married my grandfather, a widowed Baptist minister and carpenter, and had 2 daughters. He had 5 children, one fought in WW1. I still have a few of the quilts she made and 2 woven wool coverlets that she made totally starting with shearing the wool! She was a beautiful woman and never, ever said an unkind word about anyone. Sometime before WW1 she caught a stepdaughter coming out of the barn with hay stuck all over the back of her skirt, blouse and hair (LOL!). When grandma was in her last years she would sit and knit and talk to herself and this is when I learned about my aunt. Grandma was SO worried what would happen if her father caught her and her fiance in the barn. Ophelia had long black hair and big blue eyes and was 17. It sounds like a romance paperback novel, but they married and lived together until she died. Grandma and Grandpa had moved from Alabama to Oklahoma earlier and about 1915 they took a trip in a Model A or Model T Ford back to Alabama. There were no paved roads and during a rain storm in Mississippi the car got so stuck grandpa had to get a farmer to pull it with a team of mules. He was so mad he sold the car and bought train tickets! They had camped on their trip so can't you just see that preacher with his family of 7 and their bags and quilts getting on a train to finish the trip.Imagine what the car had looked like loaded with all that.

You all have a good day. Tanya

That is awesome you found out all this info~

You might enjoy one of Judith Baker Montano's books on embroidery if you are planning a well embellished quilt.

marymm 02-02-2013 06:51 PM

I plan to finish a nine-block crazy quilt within the week--it's ready for backing. I would suggest that in addition to the web--where there are marvelous crazy quilt blogs--you invest in a book or two (or at least go to your library and try to find one.) Judith Baker Montano is one of the most well known authors. First you need to learn to make a basic block. Then you can learn the different embellishments or motifs.--embroidery, ribbon embroidery, lace, beading, you name it! Most crazy quilters find several they like and some, like me, ignore the ones, they don't enjoy.

Sarint 02-02-2013 09:18 PM

Love the story. I wish I could have known my grandparents better but they died when I was young. One of my grandmothers told about traveling with a covered wagon train, walking most of the way to Missouri, as a young child. My other grandmother made me a dutch doll baby quilt and some hand crocheted purses that fit over the cut off bottom of a Quaker oatmeal box. I had an elderly auntie who passed a couple of years ago who started out share cropping with her husband in southern Arkansas. When I first met her they had no electricity, kerosene lamps, drew water from a well, a wood stove, and an "ice box" (block of ice once a week) She saved all her chicken feathers to make feather beds and pillows. I know she did make all her own quilts, mattress ticking etc., all sewn by hand and very beautiful. She would stack about ten or twelve on top of you in the feather bed on a cold night. I could hardly move enough to roll over in bed, but I was warm!

What wonderful stories.

QM, I am hoping we learn all of this in class. The teacher is so well versed in CQ. I am so looking forward to this adventure!!

What a neat site! I just spent half an hour there and will got back to check out some of their leads.

I love crazy quilts and yes, I'm a crazy quilter. What I love most about the art is the creativity. You create the blocks, the embroidery and embellishments and none else can duplicate your creation.

The one I'm working on right now is various shades of white, ecru, tan, and cream with pale prints. It will be a hexagon table topper for my kitchen table when finished. At the moment I'm still embroidering the seams. The really fun part is adding beads, ribbon flowers, buttons, charms, and jewelry, etc...yes I also add beads and pieces of jewelry. I'm
always on the lookout for interesting things I can add to my crazy quilts. I'm supposed to teach this at a local quilt shop this spring and I need to really get serious and finish it!

I belong to a Yahoo group and get lot's of idea's from them

linda faye 02-03-2013 07:19 AM

Are you going to embroider around each piece or use decorative stitches on your machine? How big will your quilt be? Good luck and let us see a pic. You may be the one to start a rage of Crazy Quilt making on the Board. :)

Roberta 02-03-2013 07:48 AM

I bought some crazy quilt templates from Jennie Doan and used scrap strips. I must say it was the most fun and easy quilt I've ever done and my DD adores it.

Wow, her site makes me want to make a crazy quilt. Awesome stuff.

quiltlady37 02-03-2013 08:55 AM

I made an unusal crazy quilt. I told my sister about a dream i had. We both belonged to an internet group and we would all meet up once a year. I dreamed one night that when I went to my mail box there were bits of lace, fabric, etc from all of the members of that internet group. I told my sister and
she posted it on our forum. Soon my mail box had everything from hot pads, fabric, bandanas with Mickey and Minne Mouse, etc. I sat down and started putting all those items into a crazy quilt. It is not a thing of beauty, but it is cherished by many . I always take it with me when we have our get togethers.
I would post a picture, but I have been having problems posting pictures. I will try again.

quiltlady37 02-03-2013 09:28 AM

I can not post a picture. I guess I just don't know how to do it.
