Does anyone know of an internet site that would provide instructions on how to make curtains or valances?

I bought some great fabric for the bedroom to make runners for the dressers, etc and I think I bought enough to make a tailored valance. But I am stuck!

Thanks!
Lori

All you really need to do is Google curtain instructions or how ever you want to word it, in your case valances and you will get lots of choices as that is how I did mine. Good luck.

I have an easy method of making valances. We have 21 windows in our house and I made valances for each of them. Some of them are pieced and then some are some patterns I just made up. The valances are 18 inches wide when finished. I take a 36 1/2 " piece of fabric, fold in half, make a 1/4 seam on top and sides, leaving about 4" side opening for turning, and an inch opening on each side for the rod opening. These openings are about an inch and a half from the top. Turn to right side, press and sew an inch wide casing ( or whatever size your rod is.) Your valances are just as pretty from the outside as the front. I'm sure this is not an original idea, just one that works for me. They don't need to be hemed because they are on the fold. The width and length of fabric will depend on your window size. Most directions recommend using twice the width fabric as the window. Hope these directions make sense to you. If not let me know and maybe I can clarify Good Luck Louise

(That last site is one of my favorites, tons of patterns for all sorts of crafts and all for free, just have to register. No spam mail from the site either, always a bonus!!)

Thanks so much... I had found one or two of these sites , so the others are all fresh for me! Lots of great ideas there!

I'm the type of sewer that when I find a design I like I'll be able to get the cutting and sewing right, but finding that nice tailored look for me to copy is not as easy as it might seem!

I'm sorry, I guess I don't know what taylored valances are suppose to look like. Mine turned out very pretty, I've had lots of compliments and they're all selflined. I know you'll be able to find the exact ones you are looking for.

Oh no! It is me who is sorry... I meant to add in the other posting that the self-lined valances would be perfect, except I only have a maximum width of 24 inches to work with! I like making valances the way you mentioned and you're right they are lovely. With the material I have left over I need to make something that is minimally gathered and still looks good. Hence the need for a box pleat or something similar.
