Cut Charm Squares - What were they for?

1 Attachment(s)
I just received a large pile of charm squares that were cut on a diagonal. At first, I thought they were just scraps left from some project but as I started looking, I realized they were really charms. They also mostly appear to be from the same fabric line.

I don't have a wide ranging experience with different types of quilts. Can anyone suggest what the original owner's intent might have been with these?

Looks as though you could swap one of each of the colors, sew them together for a wonky square. Are there more like that, or are the rest squares?

No, there were a lot of them - all cut this way.

fayzer 10-01-2012 01:56 PM

They are for a wonky pinwheel block. See here

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-01-2012 02:12 PM

Wonky pinwheel was my thought, too.

Boy, I have never seen so many intelligent people as there are on this board. Whatever question you might have, there is always someone to give a perfect answer. Good going! Barny

Yes, 8 just made one of these. My pattern called them whirligigs instead of pinwheels, but they look exactly the same. Four matching pieces in each of two colors, will make one block. They are easy and fun.

Thank you! And I found a tutorial there, as well. This is just great. :)

Wonky Pinwheels sounds like a perfect way to use them!

They almost look like dresden plates - otherwise I would go with the wonky square too.

nativetexan 10-01-2012 04:06 PM

they almost look like tumblers too. see if they fit in a row well, one up , one down , etc.

Yes, whirliygigs is what my pattern was called. I took four layer of fabric and made them in the stack-n-whack method.
Just make sure when you cut out any more pieces that all of them are all face-up or your blades will not match up.

The ones I received are already cut so I can't get into too much trouble with those. :) And the background I'm using can go either way. It looks as though I have about 30 of these - not enough for a quilt, but I do have a lot of other charm squares lying around so I hope to come up with something. These would be cute worked into a quilt back, too.

rj.neihart 10-03-2012 05:01 AM

These are cut the way I cut when I make a piano border.

quiltntoday 10-03-2012 06:10 AM

If you want to know the name of the fabric line, here it is! Moda Wee Woodland. i made a quilt out of this line using several packs of charm squares plus a background neutral. I thought this line was delightful and full of bright colors and whimsy.

I agree. I don't think you could stump you people. Isn't that grelat? I can't say it enough, this is an awesome forum.

Thank you! That is really good to know. I may just look for some more of it. And I think there is a possibility that I have some 10" squares of it, as well. Haven't quite finished going through this "inheritance". :)

Yooper32 10-03-2012 09:55 AM

I would call them wedges and boy, would I ever love to inherit a bunch of them already cut.

MimiBug123 10-03-2012 10:36 AM

I was thinking pinwheels, as well. Please let us know what you do with them!

Sewhappygal 10-03-2012 02:00 PM

Looks like the beginning of a crazy quilt to me.

sewsew busy 10-03-2012 02:21 PM

Looks like nice fabric. Lucky you.

Someone at a factory got crazy with the knife machine?

Looking good!

GeeGee 10-03-2012 10:14 PM

I am making this quilt, a totally scrappy charm from darks & lights, no two fabrics the same. You will enjoy making this, it is sew easy.

sparkys_mom 10-05-2012 06:12 AM

I am having fun with these blocks. I did mess up the first two because I was trimming the individual squares before I sewed the whole thing together. I'm tired of resizing photos for the QB plus I'm never too sure what order they are going to post, so I put a photo update on Flickr with comments to show what I messed up and how I corrected. Hope you like them.

My first thought was a Tumbler block. The pin wheel looks doable too, but for the pinwheel do the blades need to be all the same fabric? Looks that way to me. Just a thought.

Have fun. Just think, someone else cut them for you and you can enjoy making the blocks.
