How often do you replace your cutting mats?

I replace mine after 2 1/2 years after making 7 sets of placemats and 37 quilts

There was a whole post about cutting mats a while ago and there was some great information.

One was to soak your mat in water until the water is completely absorbed. Lay flat and let it dry. (It will be good as new!) Haven't done this but wow if it works. They are way too expensive. Do a search and you may find more hints. This one just blew me away.

I will share this, I had a mat that I loved (the way it was marked on the edges) but I had to replace my blades ALL THE TIME. I went to Joanne's and bought the green one (large) and what a difference. Haven't had to change a blade in a few weeks of use. JMT. Good luck.

I have an A0 size. I rotate and flip it to even out the wear. Had it at least 4 years and 25 quilts.

I have only replaced mine once when my first one was commandeered for scrapbooking and ended up with eyelet holes right through it!! (Oooops) LOL There's no fixing that! The one I have now I have had for a few years, but I move it around a lot so I am never cutting in the same place very often so it's not showing any wear yet.

I only use the front of my mat, with the measurement lines, when I really need it. Otherwise I use the back, measuring my WOF cuts using the measurements on the ruler. It really "saves" the front. Also when I cut fuzzy fabrics or batting I use the back. If the little "wispies: cling to the cut mark, it doesn't matter. Once a week I use a lint roller to remove all the "wispies"

I never thought to use the back of my mat. What a great idea!!

I love the idea of flipping the mat and using the back for WOF cuts! Great tip!

I took wet bath towels and laid it over my mine. Used vinegar, dawn dish soap, and distilled water. I let the board soak up the water. Rinsed it with clear distilled water and let it dry. Did it again. Used a disc, I had gotten that smooths the cuts, My board is like new

I invested in a Martelli Mat close to 8 years ago and it is good as new. It has 2 sides one is yellow and the other a light purple. You can usually get a better deal if you buy them at a bigger quilt show. They also roll up and then flatten out. It's been in the sunlight and has never warped.
