Cutting flannel
I'm getting ready to cut my flannel for the next project. This is really pretty stuff and since I've never cut flannel, I would appreciate any suggestions, tips, or tricks. Yes, it's been washed and pre-shrunk!
Thanks in advance Renate: |
I starch flannel heavily before cutting. Makes it very stable both for cutting and piecing (doesn't wriggle around!).

be sure you have a new blade in your cutter

new blade, no more than 2 layers at a time- some people starch their flannels- i seldom do unless they are lightweight-loosely woven- if they are nice (meaty) double sided flannels i generally don't starch. just a nice new sharp blade, & hold the rulers securely- go slow, measure twice-cut once :)

some folks say that giving flannel a 1/2" seam allowance would cut down on the fraying, and after piecing it should be quilted and not tied. i read that recently on this forum.
