Cutting a large piece of fabric
 
If you had to cut a large piece of fabric that was 50 x 60 from a piece that was 108 x 70ish, how would you go about doing it so it was square and accurate.

Open up the large piece and
Fold the 50" edge over about 26" or 27" (to be sure you avoid selvage being cut into your 'new' piece),
then measure in 25" from the fold & mark it,
then measure 30" down from the top & mark it.

Recheck & verify your measurements.
Mark the cutting lines.

I would pin pin pin the upper & lower layers together at this point to avoid their moving when you move your ruler as you cut them.


Once you've cut, it should open out to 50" X 60".

Just my humble opinion.

Depends for what purpose. If it's for a backing I would probably square it and cut
as accurately as possible...I usually cut a little extra just to be safe. Not much fun
finding out that your backing is too small or completely crooked and have to recut
or buy new fabric.

This is for the quilt top so it needs to be more accurate that if it was the back that would be trimmed once quilted.

I'd probably snip and rip. I'd give the piece I rip off a couple of extra inches so I could cut off the ripped edge. Then I'd starch, iron and cut it to the right size.
