These quick quilts they talk about, I don't see the quick. I can sew as fast as the next one thats the fun easy part. The cutting is the big pain. My hands get tired and it is to monotonous. I tend to cut for a while then do something else. It takes me as long to cut as it does to sew, how about you, any comments :?: :-o :!: :? :x :shock: :-o :-) :)

I'm supposed to be working on a memory quilt for my sister in law but I just had to take a break & see what was going on on the quilting message board. I have to take a breaks from cutting & sewing for my hands & my mind also. When I am paperpiecing I need to concentrate as I'm changing colors for the fish (in the flying fish pattern from Quilters Cache). I'm using the different flannels from my brother in law's flannel shirts (he passed away in March). None of my quilts are too quick because of this procedure. :lol: I have a hard time sitting in one place for too long.

Oh my favorite part is cutting and piecing.....I hate sewing the blocks into rows, the rows into the top and then the rest I really hate! LOL Quilting and binding! yucko! I could make blocks ALL day!!!

the only way a quilt can be truly quick ... for me at least ... is if there is very little measuring; no need for precision; who cares which color goes where?; etc. comes time to baste ... or to bind ... the whole process comes to a screeching halt. eeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuwwwwwwwwww!!!! :lol:

my favorite is planning them. the cutting out is totooooo monotomous. ha, flunked spelling i guess. but, i like sewing them up, just not having to rip them out. i am dislexic some. mostly when i think i'm not. ha. i agree with Ruth. what is a quick quilt? :roll:

I think a "quick quilt" is one that someone else is doing. I know mine seem to take months from start to finish. I've yet to figure out how anyone can do a "quilt in a day" (no offense, Eleanor Burns).

I too, have difficulty with the cutting out, arthritis and fibromyalgia is really a pain in the ol' hands and back for me. I take frequent breaks and do most of the cutting on my better days :-) I wonder if the only way to a true "quick" quilt is a precut kit :lol: :roll: I am considering working out a deal with a neighbor of mine to help me cut out fabric this winter in exchange for some weekend night babysitting......

To be fair I have put it on the back burner to do others but I agree I could never do a quilt in a day unless it is a rag quilt or a baby quilt.

I'm working on a Quilt-in-a-day Log-cabin design. I started it the week of July 4th 2003. :lol: :lol: :lol: To be fair I have both put it on the back burner and also took it apart once. With the current state of affairs. But I am getting down to business and hope to have two of them done byX-mas.

i can make a baby quilt in a day ... if it's something super-super-simple ... and if i don't get distracted by shiny objects ...

A Quick Quilt only took me 2 months once... :shock: :lol: A Quilt in a Day? Depends on how many hours a "Day" has in it.... 200?? :lol:

Actually, the fastest quilt I ever made was a large twin (not quite full) and the entire top was HST (half-square triangles), half light & half dark, all fall type colors. I used flannel for the back, mid-loft batting, and minimal quilting in the light "squares" formed by the fabric colors, and a real mitered binding. I was able to finish it in a week (had to work) including the weekends (both of them), so I guess that was a Quilt in 9 Days. :lol:

There is a book out called 90 minute quilts :lol: 15+ projects that you can do in an afternoon by Mary Ann Butler..... I just don't see me doing any quilt in a day, not alone 90 minutes :lol:

I agree with everyone and what they said,the fastest quilt I ever did was a turning twenty.I absolutely despise putting on bindings,I have two queen size quilts that have been done almost a year waiting for bindings.one I just got back from the long arm quilter, the one that is on my avatar,it turned out so awesome,it needs a binding now also.But I do agree cutting is the worst

I agree, I detest the cutting part, love piecing and quilting, even like putting binding on, it means I'm almost done ... :) I look at patterns and the first thing I check is how much cutting is involved...I always seem to pick the ones that require the most cutting.. ugh!! :roll:

Cutting does take forever, I've been trying to cut one afternoon, and then sew what I've cut the next afternoon. Unfortunately, my afternoons tend to end up belonging to my mother, or grandaughter a lot. I don't mind the cutting, but like amma, I can only do it for so long before my back and neck start to scream. I have noticed that I'm more productive cutting at the beginning of the week as opposed to the end of the week. Could be because I take my Enbrel injection on Mondays! LOL Speaking of cutting, I need to get back to cutting out these Halloween costumes!!

amma, that sounds like a plan. You probably will create another quilter in the process.

CQ I know what you mean. I really love designing, cutting and piecing, but I'm just finishing a small quilt. ( 3 sides left to bind) for my neice. I feel sooo proud.

I've never made a quick quilt, most of mine take years, it's so embarressing :oops: . I enjoy, planning cutting and piecing but the quilting part is my big hang up, when I eventually get to the binding it's like oh Wow :!: I'm nearly there. As for "Quilt in a day" :lol: , that aint never gonna happen for this gal

Quilt in a day..in my dreams. i just finished a wallhanging ( a small one ) and that took me three months!! define a quick quilt to me now that would be under 3 months!! :lol: I have to admit though that i want things to be just right and dont like unpicking..my unpicker is not my friend!! i think and then think some more before i do anything. then i think some more!! all you lovely ladies are just so inspiring with all your quilts that you have posted and it gets me to thinking that i can do that too until i stop to think.....

The closest I ever came to a "quilt in a day" that still isn't finished, is a log cabin kit that I bought on ebay. The fabric was already cut into the correct size strips and is coordinated beautifully. There are 16 16" squares. I couldn't have bought the fabric for what I paid and my time is very precious, so I got a great deal. I loved sewing the squares together. Unfortunately, that is where I got interupted and it is still not complete since July! :mrgreen:

When I started a few weeks ago a gear broke in my sewing machine and I had to get it fixed which took two weeks. So in the mean time I started cutting my squares. It did take a long time time to cut but I was able to get about 16 train cars cut. It takes me 1 to 2 hours depending on which train pattern I am on to sew the block together. I am now back to cutting. I will be cutting tree blocks starting Friday, hopefully I can start sewing them Sunday. Kyia
