So I was driving to work tonight and ithis popped in my head.

Has anyone ever made a D9P by squaring up FQ's and making really big blocks? Using each squared FQ as a square for each part of the block? If so, do you have any pics to share?

Interesting idea. My only concern is that the blocks would be super huge... since the FQ would be 18" x 18", so the first block would be 54" x 54" or so, then cut up and reassembled, 50" x 50" (rounding now), which just seems really, really big.

I could see it working better if you cut the FQs into 9" squares (4 from each), but 18" just seems very very big. Good idea though - no reason to just use the tiny 5" squares! (that's what I use)

Make two finished blocks and you have a quilt.

I did one with 6 inch blocks, so the 9 patch was 18". It was a manageable size and worked up nicely.

I actually like the idea of large blocks! When I first started quilting, I wanted to make a whole bed-sized quit...based on one block, only really enlarged. I wasn't able to figure out how to cut pieces that large, and ended up designing my own pattern, which I was very pleased with. It only sort of looked like a big flag. :) I have moved past that now, or at least for now, but I still think that many of the blocks would be beautiful on their own as a full-sized quilt.

I made one with 8.5" squares because that was the size of the horse heads.See--

The more I think about your idea, the more I would like to try it on a kid's quilt. Just pick out nine fun fabrics and that would be one quick quilt-the Super-sized D9P (SSD9P)

Thanks for the pic tin liz. I ask because I have a collection of a line with 40 FQ. (FQ bundle) and it has some pink ones, not my fave color.

Thanks for the input. Can't wait to hear more. :)
