Hi there,

I've searched through some of the older threads but I wasn't able to find any information on where to find dark wool batting. I found The Batt Lady but I cannot see the dark batting in her order form. I've contacted her but have yet to hear back (it is the weekend). Is anyone familiar with a source?

Also, I will be tying the quilt (my first time tying anything) and would like for it to have a puffier look then most quilts. Is it OK to use a thicker wool batting for hand tying? I had read in older posts that some people use blankets. I would probably do this but I don't want the quilt to be overly heavy and I'm not sure they will provide the loft I'm looking for.

Some background information: I am piecing a dark silk top with a nearly black wool backing. It will be a lap quilt about 45x55". I do not want to use any type of poly batting.

Wow, Jared, are you SURE you want black wool?   I did a google search and it seems if you want it black, it's either going to be a poly or an 80/20 blend.

Maybe you could buy the wool batting and then dye it yourself???

The wool isn't actually "black" but more of a dark grey, as you can see in the photo below. It isn't dyed but simply taken from darker sheep.

The first picture is from www.thebattlady.com. It does seem to be exactly what I need, but I cannot see it on the order form and have not yet heard back from her. The second image is simply a photo of the silk (top) and wool (bottom) that I will be using. They are both vintage and unused Japanese kimono fabrics.

Beautiful fabrics -- I can see why you want the darker batting!

If you are concerned about bearding, you can put a layer of cheesecloth between the wool batt and the fabric, both top and backing. If you dye the cheesecloth, you will not lose intensity of the color of your silk and wool fabrics.

I have used Quilters Dream wool batting and it does not beard at all because it is thermally bonded. I have also used it in primarily black quilts with no loss of intensity in color. It's truly a dream in all respects. http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/dream-wool.htm

Good luck in your search.
