Can any of you tell me the difference between hand quilting thread and machine quilting thread? It seems like there is a lot more variety in thread colors for machine quilting threads than hand quilting. Can they be used interchangably or can you use machine thread if you are hand quilting but not the other way around? I'm confused. Also, I've seen some people say not to use thread with polyester but all my thread is a blend. Thanks.

you never want to use hand quilting thread in a machine, it has a coating simular to wax. You can use anything that works for hand quilting. I know "they" say not to use poly thread because it will eventually cut through the fabric, I say " oh well!"

Kathy is right --- NEVER use hand quilting thread in your sewing machine!! However, I have used regular polyester sewing thread for hand quilting. It's just not as thick or pretty as using cotton. Try Connecting Threads -- they have some wonderful colors for both hand and machine quilting:

You can also using any cotton thread and coat it with "stichers aid" or pull your threaded needle through bees wax (you can buy both at JoAnns) to help with the hand quilting. That way you have about a zillion colors to choose from. :D

Do not use hand quilting thread in your machine. It is a much thicker thread, and I only use 100% cotton thread for hand quilting, just what I prefer to use. I never use polly thread for my hand quilting.

I prefer thread made especially for handquilting. It is stiffer and thus easier to thread the needle. It also holds up well to the constant dragging through the fabric with each stitch. I use machine quilting thread for machine quilting. Usually 100% cotton.

Never say never! I use Yli hand quilting thread for both hand and machine quilting (and piecing for that matter) and have done so for many years. It works perfectly and does no harm to the machine whatsoever. It is 100% cotton with a glazed finish. http://www.ylicorp.com/Quilting.html

I had never heard of that thread. I followed your link and I love the colors they offer. I learned something new today.
