Disappearing 9 Patch
I have pretty much decided that a Disappearing 9 patch is going to be the quilt I make for a Secret Santa this year, and have seen many lovely versions...
I have plenty of fabrics in Christmas prints, but before I start falling in love with a 2 or 3 or 5 fabric arrangement, I would love to hear what people who make this often feel is the best number of fabrics to use??? Is it more important that there is separation in tone/shade or more important that there be a variety of fabrics? Please let me know your thoughts! Thanks! |
Personally with the ones that I have done - 7 so far - I really like using 3 fabrics. Something interesting for the corners, something blendy for the other outside 4 and then something to really POP in the middle. And then I really like to play with the layout. JMHO

I saw a DP9 here that looks like it is sashed. http://obsessivelystitching.blogspot...ring-nine.html She did it as an I Spy quilt but it could be done using any fabrics.
|
I use all different never same twice
|
I used 3 fabrics on the one I did & really like it. Go to the photo section & then go to the "Gallery of Quilts" sticky. There is a section for D9P with lots of pictures. That should help you decide!

More, not less, I think has been decided, after looking over the gallery... maybe two different sets of three...Maybe its time to break out the fabrics after all!!
|
I love this pattern and have used as many fabrics as I have in my collection of Christmas fabrics-I didn't really worry about keeping the one patch consistent and have great results-its quick and each one is unique
|
I did 2 fabrics and liked but didn't love it. It made a cool secondary pattern appear, but I lost the primary pattern. My next one will be 3

lucy in the sky
I did a two color & it looks like Tee's side ways |

I'm working on one right now and I have used about 50 different batiks in it. I used 15 or so surf and sand charm packs and
some additional yardage in coordinating batiks. I'll post a pic when finished. |
Mine are normally 5 fabrics... love the look. Tried with 3 fabrics and it just didn't look right when finished.
|
I love to do scrappy blocks; so, my quilts end up looking sorta like a Sampler. I recently started adding this D9P block to my quilts. I've used 9 different fabrics -- too busy; 3 different fabrics -- not quite right; my fave is 4 fabrics. Good luck with what you decide!
|
The last two I have completed contained at least 15 different fabrics. They were "I Spy" quilts for children so I wanted a lot of variety. However, the next one I attempt could only have two or three different fabrics. It just depends on the effect I wish to achieve at the time. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. Just enjoy.:)

I like to use three fabrics. I have used two but, in my opinion, it doesn't look as nice.
|
I saw a D9P that used various fabric in the 4 corners and the same fabric in the other 5 spots of the 9-patch. She used it as an I Spy, but could be used with other fabric. I thought it was really a neat idea. Hope it's ok to post the link: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load...521294.html?13

I did the D9P entirely scrappy and used my dark tones for the middle and the four corners and the light tones for the other 4 squares. I used oversized squares starting with 7" finished size squares to end up with blocks that were 21 x 21 finished. It went really fast and was beautiful when completed. IMHO as long as you have contrast between the corners and the other four patches they look beautiful.
|
I like to use three fabrics with the center piece a solid or one that reads solid (perhaps some texture). I like the four corners to be the focus fabric with the other four in "cross position" to be a quieter blender or color pulled from the focus piece.
|
I did a lot of different fabrics and it turned out great.
|
Mine is a scrap quilt, with the same fabric in the center and novelties in the corners

It is a great pattern and the number of fabrics you use really depends on the look you want. If you use 9 fabrics it will just look a little more scrappy. Have fun with it!

Here is one of mine (D9P) with three fabrics.
|
I made one from batiks, my common color to use was black. I used it in the 4 corners and the middle and it turned out great. I love scrappy's, everyone comments how much work you did.
|
I just made a d9p baby quilt using charms & three solid colors. The charms had patterns & some coordinating solids. I used the charms in the 5 patch "x", with the solid charms in the middle, and the other 4 patch in the coordinating fabrics. I rearranged it to the spinner layout.
Learn from my example, as you can see, I coordinated each 9p. It would have looked better if I had mixed up the charm colors, rather than coordinating them. (Rusts with Rusts, blues with blues, whites with whites...) It looks kind of "patchy". Kathleen, that is lovely!

Thanks for the good variation on the D9P. I bookmarked it and will give it a try in the future.
|
i like to use about 15.
i don't do it like everyone else does in an organized fashion, i do it scrappy looking, i use a 9 constatnt frabrics, and add in a few others, to give4 it varity, this way, i use more and get a greater color look. (if you can, look up Jayden's quiot to see how i do it. have fun and good luck |

I like it best with 4 fabrics - 2 of them very similar for the large squares. I like a light background best, and a contrast for the center block which becomes the small squares.

I just love seeing all these pictures of the different color formulas. They're all beautiful.

I can see a D9P can be what you want it to be...SO COOL :)
I was trying to decide after my first quilt (just squares..so can practice techniques). I think it will be D9P!!! |

OK, an update!!! Eight fabrics so far... you can see them if you click on the link below that says 2011 photo challenge ...rteest42/wordpress... I posted the fabrics as my photo a day!
I am ready now to sew into 9-patches...If I need more blocks I am going to switch out and add one more fabric I think... MOST of the blocks have that light cross hatched fabric as the center, but some have a bright green or red... I think this going to be cool!! Thanks for sharing so many lovely versions for inspiration! |

I've done several D9P and use a whole lot of different fabrics. Makes a fun scrappy look. I try to keep with a theme, just like you would for a scrappy, like lavenders or brights, but other than that, not much goes into fabric choice.
|
I have made a number of them and usually use three fabrics. I did use five once when doing a green, purple, and cream d9p and used light and dark purple and green and alternated the pattern. It really turned out great.
|
I usually use three colors when doing d9p but have done one with 5.
|
I think it is a matter of personal preference. I made one that has several fabrics and it turned out quite nice and I have seen some that have been done with 2-3 fabrics and are a totally different look but also very nice. :)
