I have seen online pictures of quilts that are colored in with colored pencils. They are either set with some sort of fabric medium so the colors are permanent and washable, or it is using the faux applique method with pencils called Inktense. Anybody try this technique yet?

Ahaha! I thought this post was going to be about coloring your rough draft of your quilt before you make it. (I do that.)

I think there is a way to do this with crayons, too, but I don't know much about these methods.

I just talked about that with someone just before xmas , I had never heard of it before, but I will speak to them again and see what they say as I can't remember if she said she was doing it or gonna do it? or just had-- how to do it.

Yes you can! My daughter traced some pictures out of a coloring book, just an outline and then colored the pictures for a quilt for her son. After you finish coloring, with just regular crayons, put something protective over the picture to protect your iron and iron it. The ironing sets the colors for you. She did 9 of them and then I sashed them for her and finished putting it together. You can wash and dry it as normal. I have a kit that I keep meaning to get started on that is a flower bouquet that you color and make a wall hanging out it. I thought about when my grandson and granddaughter get a bit older I will trace an outline of some pics on 12" squares, let them color them and then make them some lap quilts out of it. It's very fun.

I have heard of the colors method. I want to try it someday.

I think it sounds interesting and fun. I wanted to do an applique quilt, started- then remembered why I don't like applique! The pictures I saw online were of wholecloth quilts, with the flowers and feathering colored in. Some of the quilts looked quite beautiful. Some looked like applique.

MsSage, thanks for the great tutorial. I never heard of Inktense pencils and will look for them at Michael's. Does Joann's carry them? I can't want to start playing around with the pencils and see what happens.
