I love fabric so much that I am selling it now. Most of my fabrics I sell at $3.99 and $4.99. I can keep prices low since I don't have overhead.

If you're interested, I'm on ebay and my seller ID is whitediamond98. I'll have a web site up and running February 1, 2011. Linda Rae

My limit (in Australia) would be about $30 a metre, I think. But I seldom spend that amount, probably my average is $20 - $25. If I find something on sale for $5 a metre that is halfway decent I get excited and buy 4 metres and figure it will come in useful one day. It always does!

I won't pay full price for any fabric, but I would have to say $10 per yard would be the max. I wait patiently for a good sale for what I want and get the best deal out there I can find. I have lost out on fabric I would have loved to own, but in the long run, I have a room full of yardage pieces I got at great prices that I love, and have yet to figure out what to do with it. I use solid colors of Kona for all my backings (except when I can get patriotic on sale) and only buy it when it is 50% off at Joanns.

i do in ways...i guess with the (exception-theres always that one you would pay anything for) i hate paying $10 a yard for fabric...and will look at it....feel it....look somemore....and walk away figuring i will find it somewhere else for less if i really want it.
but i think i'm worse about smaller cuts...i want a deal on smaller cuts...and one of our lqs owners explained to me :
(a pre-cut should cost more than yardage because time was spent cutting) so she might have $8 a yard fabric but her fq's are $2.50...making it $10 a yard.
i hate paying more than $1.50 for fq's unless they are specialty fabrics (like batiks) but i still want a deal. ;)

I usually purchase fabrics on sale if I can. But that being said, when you are planning a quilt there is always something that you need. Currently I try not to exceed $10US per yard but recently I was short some white on white for a project (which I had purchased online for ~$7) and paid over $10 py for the 4 yards (ouch). As prices go up, I may have to re-adjust my thinking. I have already seen in many LAQ shops large price increases.

on most fabrics yes but if I see something that I think is unique and I may never see it again I will spend more but not rediculously high.

I have purchased so much of my fabric on sale. When our Walmart closed their fabric shops, I was able to build my stash (and my Granddaughter's and neighbor built hers) from the great sale prices. I bought a lot of basics/blenders that I can mix with those that are the feature piece. Now, I will go to LQS and buy a yard or less at their (high) prices and go from there. My plan is working so far...pretty well, however, I slipped when I saw some at the LQS that I LOVED. End of plan for that day. I was commissioned to make a few mini quilts for Christmas gifts for my daughter's BF's employees. I only needed to buy 1/2 yard to mix with my patterns. The rest was from my "sales" stash. YIPPEE!

So my average right now is probably around $5/yard or less.

Does this help?

Now I am in Wimington,NC with Daughter who took a job here. I'll be shopping here and in Gastonia (Mary Jo's Cloth Store) so we'll see how disciplined I can be and/or how much fun I'll have. But it'll all be on sale or pieces I can't find at home. Mary Jo's had the most beautiful cotton in solids I had ever seen on one trip. I'll be aiming for this when I get there because it's not available at home. It looks and feels like silk but at a reasonable price.

Any comments?
