Love this board!! I see so many beautiful quilts and learn a lot from the various posts. I am wondering if anyone pieces quilt tops upon request. If so, how much do you charge on an average? Thanks

Personally speaking, I don't like the headaches. I prefer to quilt to my own heart beats and give them away to people who probably want them.

It's REALLY hard to 'hear' exactly what someone else wants. If you're going to make a quilt for someone, it's probably best to have them buy the fabric and pick out the exact pattern, so there won't be any misunderstandings. AND agree on exactly what you're going to charge - per hour, per inch, per whatever -before any buying by either of you happens.

I have and it depends on the pattern.

One time a woman wanted a jacket made from on old cutter quilt she had. I met her at a fabric store (a place totally foreign to her!!!) and spent time looking through pattern books to get an idea of what styles would work with the amount of "material" I had to work with. She was insistent on a longer jacket-type pattern and we picked out fabric she liked to trim the jacket. I had to do quite a bit of creative cutting and piecing to make this all work out and I thought this turned out well. When she picked it up, she tried it on - it fit just fine. She looked at herself in a mirror and said "this looks like a bathrobe", made an awful face and left very unhappy (after grudgingly paying me the price we had agreed on). Let me stick to doing my own thing PLEASE!!

Yes .. Have made dozens of quilt tops, all sizes for others who would send
fabric and instructions/pattern wanted. Love the sewing as much as
doing my own projects. Actively doing this since 1990's.

Thanks so much for the reply. The person who asked me to make the top has a pattern and fabric. I wouldn't consider piecing it under different circumstances. I just don't know where to begin to tell her how much I would charge. How do you come to a conclusion on the price?

I agree with JoanneS....Made a centerpiece once for a friend. All she wanted was something red, black and white for her kitchen.
Didn't care about the shape or pattern (just had overall diameter limits)
I made it for her at no charge. It think it looked nice.....nope! wrong shade of red - - too bright!
She took it and went home unhappy. Oh well, some people are hard to please.

No I don't. Then it would be work and take my enjoyment from the project. I do however make things for others but it's a whole different feeling!
Quilting is my passion and I won't let anything interfere with my process, if that makes any sense!

It's hard to charge for something you made. Because you are working on your time but the person who is buying it doesn't see it that way. Unless they understand what goes into quilting.
