I dream of being able to quit my job and spending as much time as I want quilting or in pursuit of other crafts but mainly quilting. Do you think you would ever get tired and stop quilting. Or is it because I don't have the the time I want to devote to quilting that I am dreaming. Maybe if I had the time I would be wanting to do something else. I used to knit and crochet but I have almost put that totally down for quilting. I couldn't see myself ever getting tired of quilting. What about you?

leatheflea 12-22-2010 11:29 AM

I havent had a job in 3 months and Im sick of sewing. Im currently working on UFOs. I spent the last 3 months selling what I could. Been very busy and I'm ready for a real job. I like sewing as a hobby not a full time job.

SherriB 12-22-2010 11:30 AM

I hope I never get tired of quilting. There are so many patterns that I want to try and make. And all the different lines of fabric coming out!!! Quilting has never been boring or tedious and to me, that means alot.

bjeriann 12-22-2010 11:33 AM

When I was handquilting I would get tired of it but since I FMQ I don't. Sometimes I don't feel like loading the frame, but once it is in I have a hard time stopping. Now making the tops I love to do because they are all so different. Usually while I'm quilting - I'm planning my next quilt top.

Sadiemae 12-22-2010 11:33 AM

I can get tired of a quilt, but not quilting.

I have sewed all my life; and have done all kinds, apparel, wedding gowns, home dec. and now quilting. If I "get tired" of something it is because I am tired of that particular type. It just means I am ready for a new challenge, even half square triangles

It depends on the quilt and who's doing it. I was really busy with this year doing 20 projects, I only have 4 left to quilt and bind in Jan. This year I was trying to get rid of some scrap material and everytime I finish each quilt and I trimmed the backing I got more scrap material. As for me I need the fast pace quilts that I can get done quickly. The quilts with lots of pieces in one block I think is too tedious for me. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful, but maybe not for me to do. So to answer your question is, yes I think I can get tired of quilting/sewing, but I give myself a break like this month for instance and other party months that I may have to clean the house and I will be ready to get going. All it take is to wake up Christmas morning and open a present with a pattern or quilting book in it and I am ready to figure out the next project.

Bobbielinks 12-22-2010 11:54 AM

I have been piecing quilts for about 30 years and quilting for the last 11. And NO I have never got tired of quilting! My eyes may get tired, my neck or sholders may get sore but given a little rest I'm ready to quilt again.

J.M. 12-22-2010 11:55 AM

Get tired of quilting? No. Get tired of doing the same quilt? Definitely. I'm currently working on a top which consists of just sewing squares together. Sometimes, I just want something that's not a square! Which is why I am working on more than one project at the same time.

gale 12-22-2010 11:55 AM

Yes and I do sometimes. Then I do some other craft like scrapbooking for a while (until I get sick of it). I used to make dolls and stuff to sell and I got really sick of doing that-it's not as much fun when you have to do it.

Japonica 12-22-2010 11:58 AM

I used to wish that I could not work anymore and be able to just play all day with my varied interests in crafts. Well, be careful what you wish for!!!! Laid off three years ago and decided to just retire thanks to a great DH. Took awhile to learn how to play. I have worked since I was 17 and currently am 58. Felt guilty for some odd reason. Now, 3 years down the road, I love it. I must admit I miss the challenge of a once fast paced, heavy travel job.

Now I have put new challenges in front of myself. Polymer clay, fused glass, (hubby bought me a kiln while I was still working and I never used it)crochet, made 6 baby afghans since I have been laid off. Got into jewelry making a bit. Now quilting. It is something I have always wanted to attempt and I did 2 months ago. I blew the dust off a sewing machine DH bought me 10 years ago and I never used. I am so hooked!!! I love it. The best part...fabric shopping. OMG! Like I needed another obsession! I know I own Michaels craft store now I am looking to buy Joann's!! Quilting is GREAT. So, long story short, No, I can't ever see myself getting tired of it!

Wendys Quilts 12-22-2010 12:03 PM

I think about quilting when I wake up in the morning and then before I got to bed at night. Lol I've got it bad, I know lol but I have gotten tired of it before. I'm an addict though.

I agree. For me, too much of anything gets tiring after a while. That's when I take a break. When I come back I have a whole new outlook and enthusiasm. I do my hobbies and crafts as long as they're fun. When I start doing them because I have to I know it's time to take a break.

gale 12-22-2010 12:04 PM

I should mention that even if I'm tired of quilting or sewing, I don't ever get tired of reading all of the quilting/sewing blogs and coming to quilting boards.

Amen to that!

featherweight 12-22-2010 12:51 PM

I have been retired for almost 5 years. Couldn't wait to stay home and quilt and I still have that same feeling. No I can't see myself getting tired of it. I better not with all the fabric I have in my sewing room.

LivelyLady 12-22-2010 01:07 PM

I love quilting as a hobby, but if I had to do quilting as a job it wouldn't be fun anymore.

JulieM 12-22-2010 01:21 PM

I have been quilting for almost 2 years. Last year I made quilts for alot of my family. Come Jan. 2010 I was a bit worn out with it and did not quilt for 4-5 months.

I have not made any quilts for any family with the exception of one for my son. I think what happened is I gave some quilts as gifts to those who were not quilt worthy and I was just kind of bummed about the whole thing. Now I am wiser and more selective. I am working on quilts now daily. I am retired also.

mic-pa 12-22-2010 01:21 PM

I have sewed all my life, got into quilting 25yrs ago, retired 18 yrs ago and I am still going strong with the quilting. Always new fabric, patterns and ideas coming in magazines, on this board and every where else. Get tired of quilting?? I hope never.

amma 12-22-2010 01:39 PM

I don't think I will ever get tired of quilting :D:D:D

Twisted Quilter 12-22-2010 02:00 PM

Yep, right now I'm on a break. I ran out of fabric a while back and can't seem to get into it right now. Maybe after the holidays.

olgaflowers 12-22-2010 02:11 PM

My love was gardening, didn't think anything could out do
my love of flowers, my name was olgaflowers,
but now I found a new LOVE ! so I change my name to
"olga,quilts" and that's all she wrote :)

kbs 12-22-2010 02:13 PM

I can sew for quite a while but do get tired of it, just as with anything I do for too long. Have different projects going, have already started to receive seed catalogues. Will be in the greenhouse getting ready by end of February.

ann clare 12-22-2010 02:21 PM

Off course. So far so good. If that time comes I will take a break and then decide. Quilting is my hobby. I must enjoy it.

sueisallaboutquilts 12-22-2010 02:24 PM

Never! But I wouldn't want to do it for hire.

quilter41 12-22-2010 02:26 PM

I retired in 2003 and went back to work in 2007. Quilting is great but not as a full time hobby. I have quilted for over 30 years and couldn't wait to be able to quilt all the time, but it got pretty tiresome sewing everyday. So now I work 12 days a month and sew some of the remainder. Plus it gets me out with the public. I definitely don't like being home all the time. I always say be careful what you wish for. LOL!

I agree with leatheflea. I like sewing as a hobby not a full time job.
I love quilting but like the free style of quilting what 'I' want to, when I want to. Every day is not a cutting day but might be a perfect stitching day.
I feel a little suffocated when someone else's goal or plans step in the path of my choosing when 'I' want to quilt 'what'. My plans have been interrupted often in 2011. I am using that as an opportunity to grow, venture out and work with others. (But mannnn,, I really do not like pulling my quilt off the machine to work on other things. I will get over it.) :)

seamstome 12-22-2010 02:29 PM

yes I did. Dropped out for ten years...not a stitch. Then got back into it.

quiltbugs 12-22-2010 03:05 PM

I once thought I would never get tired of it and then all of a sudden one day I woke up and just didn't feel like quilting. I didn't quilt for a year. I just quit. Mid-project. I knitted, I crocheted, I painted, I played Farmville (LOL), and I didn't touch my sewing machines.

Then one day out of the blue I felt like quilting again and started up right where I left off. Still going, but who knows if or when it will hit me again that I don't feel like doing it.

pittsburgpam 12-22-2010 03:05 PM

I don't think I would get tired of quilting. I do get tired of a certain quilt sometimes and work on something else.

I hope to retire and do it full time someday.

grannyp70 12-22-2010 03:08 PM

No I will never get tired of quilting, I love to do it, sometimes I just am not able to do it everyday, but I will never quit quilting.

CindyBee 12-22-2010 03:15 PM

I've been retired for a couple of years now and I do sew most days. I don't think I will ever get tired of quilting. Every day I look forward to completing my chores and errands so that I can retreat to my sewing room.

Annaquilts 12-22-2010 03:19 PM

I have thought about that also. By now I have been quilting for 6 years. I also do other hobbies but quilting has taken over. I live in a warmer climate and knitted items are not as practical. Also clothing gets out grown while quilts seem to last longer. I guess I do not know for sure. For now I really enjoy it and the toys and fabric I have invested in have sure gotten their use. Also some of my children and friends quilt so that spurs me on and gives me company adding a new dimension. It would have to be something really good to replace quilting.

carolaug 12-22-2010 03:46 PM

I know how you feel I was out of work for a year. I did not start quilting till two months prior to getting another job. Now I wonder why I am sitting at a desk all day...really thinking I may have to retire. Once I started doing projects, gardening, quilting, cooking, cleaning...I started to really enjoy being home. I do like the extra money for my fun projects but I also can do the same by looking for sales or using what I already have.

I love it - right now I don't have to work and most days I spend all day in my sewing room. So many quilt blocks I still want to make - its like there is not enough hours in the day...

patdesign 12-22-2010 07:21 PM

Nope, cant ever find enough time to get sick of it.

Lizzytish 12-22-2010 07:25 PM

Tired of quilting/sewing never. tired of a project most likely.

Ladyjanedoe 12-22-2010 07:34 PM

I get tired of sewing and then I play a lot of piano or read. Then I come back to sewing with a fresh frame of mind.

luvspaper 12-22-2010 08:20 PM

I've taken breaks in the past (honestly many years there for a while). I have quilted more while working outside the home than I ever did as a stay at home mom....not sure why. Maybe because I can only truly afford this hobby when I have a job LOL!

Boscobd 12-22-2010 09:27 PM

I hope I never get tired of quilting. Seems as tho I have an endless list of quilts/projects I want to make. My problem is that I have soooo many quilts I have made for myself that I don't know what to do with them all! I love making quilts for others and various causes, but those opportunities aren't always there or what I'm into at the time!
