I have noticed when I walk away from the sewing area, I am covered in thread clippings, and so is the floor... even though I have a receptacle for them...

Do you clip and toss and clean later, or do you have a place for the clippings and put them in their place?

Do the thread catchers that hang on the side of the table attached to a pin cushion help to corral the clippings?

What do you do with all those clippings over time? Toss or use in another way?

lynnie 10-20-2011 08:55 AM

where else am i supposed to thow them?????
i really need one of those thread catchers, i need to make one now!!!!

bearisgray 10-20-2011 08:56 AM

I don't TOSS my thread clippings on the floor - but some of them manage to land there anyway! :?

luv-e 10-20-2011 08:57 AM

I have a bag taped to my table but for some reason they like to hang onto my clothes..... when I leave sewing rm DH is grooming me like monkeys groom each other...lol lol lol lol

thepolyparrot 10-20-2011 08:58 AM

I aim for the trash bag or the empty Kleenex box.

My carpet is full of threads, anyway. :?

MamaBear61 10-20-2011 08:59 AM

Not intentionally, but many seem to miss the receptacle where they are supposed to land. How many have gotten to the grocery store and found random coloured threads hanging from your clothing? Or better yet, in your hair?

Rose L 10-20-2011 08:59 AM

Heavens no! I have carpet in my sewing room and it's hard to get the threads up off of it. Plus they clog up the beater bar on my vacuum and I'm not thrilled about cleaning that later. I'm pretty anal about getting the scraps and threads into the wastebasket, it saves me time in the long run so I have more time to spend sewing.

Deborahlees 10-20-2011 09:00 AM

What works well for a thread catcher is an empty kleenex box....keep on beside my sewing machine and on the table beside the sofa...Do mark it 'TRASH"....I also use a swifter on the floor at least once a day (hard wood floors) otherwise the thread gets caught up in my rolling wheels on my chair....

Ditto.
I have a little paper bag taped to the side of my cutting table, which functions as a thread catcher. I'm very good about picking up all the threads and clipped corners every day because I don't want the cat to eat them.

Me too!

bearisgray 10-20-2011 09:03 AM

Those wire pet brushes work really well to gather thread clippings off carpet.

I like to get most of the threads off the carpet before applying the vacuum cleaner to the rug.

Lori S 10-20-2011 09:04 AM

I attempt to get in into a bag. I have learned if it does not make it .. let it go! and just vacuum or de-thread at the end of a day or two. I find it enourmously frustrating to keep trying to get it into the bag, when it clearly is not ready/wanting to go there.

LindaM49 10-20-2011 09:10 AM

Trash can right beside my sewing machine and most of the threads I toss or brush off the top of the cabinet usually end up on the floor. And then of course one of our dogs thinks the trash can is a good place to find stuff to chew on so he scatters them all over the carpet. It's amazing how you can block off the can thinking there is no way he can get to it...but he's just a little guy but strong enough to move the sewing chair away from the machine to get to the trash. So far he has destroyed 2 spools of thread...he figured out how to open the lid on my sewing box that sits on the floor...I'm guilty of not always latching it.

charity-crafter 10-20-2011 09:15 AM

I wod them up and set them next to the sewing machine with the intention of throwing them in the trash can but forget and put piles of stuff on top of them and they get scattered all over the place.

COYOTEMAGIC 10-20-2011 09:15 AM

I toss them TOWARDS the trash can. For some reason the dang things never seem to stay. I just bought a little can today that has a lid that flips over. Hand in, Hand out, thread STAYS in!!

nativetexan 10-20-2011 09:16 AM

i try hard to reach my trash can but they tend not to go there.

yep done this :)

On the floor.
But it's a tile floor, so clean up is a breeze.
I'm sure if I were working on carpet, I'd find myself another method. ;-)

Yes, the thread cathcers help but I still tend to have things stuck to me. My two friends that do not use the thread catchers leave a big mess and I need to vacuum for sure. That is how I noticed they do help even if they do not catch everything. LOL

I use tid bits of thread and fabric that are too small to stuff a big decorative fabric bag. I am planning to collect enough to make a big floor pillow. Some people stuff dog beds but I have no dog just lots of kids. I also put in small pieces of batting that are too small to sew together or repurpose for other projects.

 Same here! I can't stand threads on the floor or on myself! My friend Beth has a son who cleans the floor in her sewing room. She will often send me a (text) picture of a pile of threads on her floor! And then she sends another of her son cleaning it up! He loves doing it, so I think she puts more on the floor than necessary just so he can clean it up.

BellaBoo 10-20-2011 09:23 AM

I put each thread clippings in catcher. I am a firm believer in if you don't make a mess there will be no mess to clean up.

icon17 10-20-2011 09:24 AM

Not on purpose! But still seems my space is coverd with the little devils.

gollytwo 10-20-2011 09:26 AM

I have a plastic hotel ice bucket that I line with a grocery plastic bag - when it's full it goes to the garbage and a new plastic bag is inserted

moonwork42029 10-20-2011 09:28 AM

I have a plastic grocery bag "blue taped" to the table so I can just put them in there as I clip them.

annthreecats 10-20-2011 09:29 AM

I have a small trash can on the floor that I have been training myself to use. I used to just put them on the table on the other side of the machine until I was done sewing, but they always ended up all over my project so I'm trying to fix my system. Old dog, new tricks.

Well, I save them and make a art quilt out of just the thread with them. The picture that I wanted is not on this computer so will have to add another time, but this will give you an idea.

Granna of 5 10-20-2011 09:36 AM

I try to get them in the trash can, but they tend to wind up on the floor and my clothes. I bought one on those long handle sticky rollers to roll over the rug before vacuuming that help the rollers in the vacuum.

Granny Quilter 10-20-2011 09:40 AM

I was until: I checked my vacume cleaners brushes. It took me an hour to get them all unwound and out of the brushes so they could clean.

sparkys_mom 10-20-2011 09:43 AM

NEVER! I have a trash can right next to my machine and they go there. I also use a hand vac for cleanup of any "misses". I have a dog and am a fanatic about not letting him get hold of any thread or long thin pieces of fabric. I know the thread isn't likely to cause a problem because it is never very long, but long pieces of things like thread or yarn can entangle the intestines of a dog or cat and can cause great havoc - meaning requiring surgery and possibly cause death.

I try really hard to put them into the trash, but not always successful. I swear that my pins, scissors, cut pieces, etc enjoy base jumping to the floor. I have an extending magnet for the metal stuff, but really need the weekly work of my friend who cleans for us.

Prism99 10-20-2011 09:47 AM

I roll some blue painter's tape (or masking tape) around my hand and stick it on the right side of my sewing cabinet. Loose threads get stuck there until the tape is full, at which time I throw it away and put a new one there. Works for me!

oh never thought of this... that would be handy, could be stuck anywhere...

lots of good tips here, and nice to know I am not the only one with migrating threads and bits and pieces

I have been saving mine, thinking they might be handy for something.. I like the idea of stuffing... I plan to make more of the little stuffed owls, so this stuff would be handy for those.

ghostrider 10-20-2011 10:04 AM

No, I don't throw thread clipping on the floor of my studio any more than I throw empty cans on the floor of the kitchen. My threads go in an empty plastic frosting container as soon as I clip them and get thrown away when it's full.

Rhaorth 10-20-2011 10:06 AM

well, I don't throw empty cans on the floor of my kitchen, but I do tend to have a lot of loose threads on the floor where I sew. This doesn't mean I would trash the house, it just means that threads have a way of going everywhere.
(sometimes I do toss the threads to the floor, when I am on a roll and don't want to have to try to aim for the thread bin, doesn't mean I am a slob)

Greenheron 10-20-2011 10:10 AM

I aim for the trash but end up decorated with some. Combined with the dogs' hair all over me, they make an emphatic fashion statement. :-P

kayahr 10-20-2011 10:12 AM

No loose threads on my carpeted floor. My cat would be likely to try to eat them. I grab the thread with one hand and cut with the other. I pull the sewing area trash can right next to me and put the threads directly into the trash can.

ann clare 10-20-2011 10:15 AM

Guilty. On the floor.
